The Giants inflated the hopes and dreams of their fan base with a Summer of Love tour and then immediately stuck a pin in those hopes and dreams with their 21-6 loss to the Commanders in Landover, Md. Hello deflation, my old friend. For those with the stomach for it, here are some thoughts, starts and tidbits as the Giants lost a season opener for the eighth time in nine years:

Offensive line play in training camp is often a mixed bag, with both sides often knowing what the other is trying to accomplish. Going against your own teammates on the defensive line, day after day, leads to a sense of familiarity that can usher in comfort. Sure enough, there was a feeling of comfort around the Giants’ offensive line heading into this season, even without left tackle Andrew Thomas, who hopes to play in Week 2 after missing the opener as he puts the finishing touches on his rehab following foot surgery. Four of the five starters returned and yet the results were abysmal in Game 1.

“We played behind the sticks on first and second down, put us in a lot of third and medium, third and longs,” guard Jon Runyan Jr. told The Post afterwards. “I feel like we did a really good job executing in those situations in camp but this is obviously the season now.”
