The acclaimed HBO Original documentary continues the story that first captivated audiences in the popular podcast Serial. The newest installment (“Part Five: The Tree Grew”) focuses on the latest chapter for Adnan Syed, who was arrested and convicted of the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Syed’s case was shrouded in controversy and uncertainty, both back in 1999 and presently. His conviction was vacated in 2022 — but later reinstated on appeal — with Syed being released from prison.

The new episode, per HBO, “chronicles the turns in the case that unfold after a suspect from the original investigation into Lee’s murder is caught assaulting a woman. This development leads Adnan’s legal team to revisit the case and demand a new investigation.”
