Tonight’s new episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Season 19, Episode 7: “I’ll Follow the Sun”) will be the last episode for Ellen Pompeo as a series regular. Per Deadline, the long-time star of the popular ABC medical drama is scaling back her presence on the show to focus on new projects (including an upcoming Hulu miniseries) but is expected to return for the season finale. Pompeo will still provide the voiceovers for all Season 19 episodes and could continue to make appearances beyond his season.
ABC’s official synopsis for tonight’s high-profile episode teases that the doctors plan a goodbye surprise while “Nick (Scott Speedman) confronts Meredith about the future of their relationship.”

There are at least another seven announced episodes in Season 19 yet to air, and likely more. Additionally, though Grey’s Anatomy has yet to be officially renewed for another season, we expect the show to return for Season 20.
