The first holiday of the year was just a couple of weeks ago, with banks and big retailers closed on New Year’s Day.
Now, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is here — and it happens to coincide with President-elect Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day.
What’s opened and what’s closed? Is MLK Day a national holiday? Here’s everything you need to know:
MLK Day was approved as a federal holiday in 1983 and has been recognized in all 50 states since 2000.
As a holiday, federal offices will be closed and those workers will have a paid day off, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day — or MLK Day — is on Monday, Jan. 20.
MLK Day always takes place on the third Monday of January since it falls near his birthday, which is Jan. 15.
Trump’s Inauguration Day will be on Monday, Jan. 20 — the same day as MLK Day.
It’s rare for the two federal holidays to overlap, and this is just the third time in history that a president will take the oath of office on MLK Day.
Inauguration Day is always on Jan. 20 and has been since the passage of the 20th Amendment in 1933.
However, in years where Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday, the president has a private swearing-in on that day, followed by a public ceremony the following, Jan. 21. That last happened during President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.
The two other times Inauguration Day and MLK Day overlapped were during President Bill Clinton’s second inauguration in 1997 and President Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.
The two holidays are not expected to overlap again until 2053.
Schools and colleges are likely closed for MLK Day, but closings may vary by state and school district, so be sure to check your local district’s website.
Banks follow the federal holiday schedule, meaning all banks and their branches will be closed.
However, ATMs and digital banking features will still be accessible.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq close for MLK Day every year, according to the stock market holiday schedule.
Similar to federal offices, all state offices will also be closed on Jan. 20 — including the Department of Motor Vehicles.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, post offices will be closed on Jan. 20 for MLK Day, so you will not receive your regular mail and packages from USPS on this day. Priority mail would be the only exception.
UPS is closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but UPS Express Critical service will still be available. Limited UPS Store locations may be open; so be sure to check with your local store.
Meanwhile, FedEx will have modified service for MLK Day, meaning early on-call pickups and drop-box pickups will be available in some areas.
Most restaurants and stores will be open Monday, and many will hold sales over the holiday weekend.
Even though Costco Wholesale clubs close for other federal holidays, they will be open on Jan. 20.
Goodwill is also open on MLK Day, but be sure to check with your local store to check whether the holiday has modified hours of operation.
Olive Garden will be open with regular hours on MLK Day.
