NextImg:WGA Protestors Poke Fun at Jenna Ortega’s Controversial Comments About Rewriting ‘Wednesday’ Scripts

As the Writers Guild of America strike continues, Hollywood writers have directed their focus to Netflix’s latest breakout star, Jenna Ortega

Ortega portrays the titular Adams family character in the fantasy series Wednesday, which premiered last November.

She bagged a Golden Globe and three MTV Movie and TV Award nominations for her role.

Per Variety, television writer Brandon Cohen attended a strike with a sign calling out the young actor’s previous comments about rewriting the show’s script because she felt it wasn’t consistent with her character.

His sign read, “Without writers, Jenna Ortega will have nothing to punch up!”

On Twitter, Cohen opened up about his sign and explained that it was a compliment. He called Ortega “one of us.”

The Netflix actor went viral in March for an interview on Armchair Expert where she revealed that she had to repeatedly “put her foot down” on set.

“Everything that Wednesday does, everything I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle? It made no sense,” she said at the time. “There was a line about a dress she has to wear for a school dance and she says, ‘Oh my god I love it. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ I had to go, ‘No.'”

The actor admitted that she behaved “almost unprofessional” during filming, and would change lines and confront the writers.

At the time, television producer Steven DeKnight called her statement “beyond toxic” and “entitled.” Later clarifying his criticism, he said, “She’s young, so maybe she doesn’t know any better (but she should).  She should also ask herself how she would feel if the showrunners gave an interview and talked about how difficult she was and refused to perform the material.”

Other writers on strike have brought Ortega back into the narrative. The Order writer Jason Filiatrault tweeted, “I guess when it comes time to film season 2 of Wednesday, Jenna Ortega can write all the scripts.” The Bear writer Karen Joseph Adcock added, “Rewriting is writing! See you at the line, Jenna!”

BoJack Horseman producer Nick Adams chimed in with, “Jenna Ortega better be back from NY for her afternoon shift on the picket line.”

The WGA strike went into effect earlier this week and has since caused numerous late-night television shows to shut down, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers. The Guild called the strike after failing to reach an agreement with studios in regard to fair pay and protections in the changing media landscape due to streaming platforms.
