After waiting nearly three years for the highly anticipated second season of Netflix‘s Wednesday, the show’s creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are assuring fans that Season 3 is already well underway.

In a recent interview with DECIDER, the co-creators explained that a series of unforeseen circumstances were at play when it came to the sophomore season of the Jenna Ortega hit series, including the 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strikes. With those delays out of the way, they say “the goal” is for the turnaround from Season 2 to Season 3 to be expedited.

“Obviously, we want it sooner than three years. The show is very difficult to make. I know it sounds like we only have eight episodes, but each episode is like a movie in terms of — we have over 3000 visual effects shots, it takes us nine months to shoot the show. So it is a big show. It’s like a behemoth in terms of getting the show made,” Millar told DECIDER. “We share everyone’s frustrations in terms of the time it’s taken to get back on the air. But the aim is for Season 3 to come much faster. That’s definitely our goal.”

Also behind Season 2’s delay? The “incredibly high standards” the series has in terms of “visual effects,” Millar said, explaining that the finer details are all too important on their quest to make a great show. The series also moved production from Romania to Ireland between the first and the second season, which contributed to the timeline getting even messier.

“Believe me, we didn’t want the show off the air that long either,” Gough said of Season 1’s release in November 2022 to Season 2’s debut on the streaming service in August and September 2025. “Season 3 will definitely be coming faster than Season 2.”

As for when exactly Season 3 will be hitting the Netflix homepage, Gough and Millar said they could not give an estimate on a release date as they are primarily focused on getting the season written and made, including coordinating schedules with the increasingly popular stars, including Emma Myers and Gwendoline Christie, who spent the time between seasons filming Netflix’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Season 2 of Severance, respectively.

However long it takes, the co-creators are committed to making the best story possible, giving the millions of fans around the world the next chapter in the twisted and terrible saga of Wednesday Addams (Ortega). At least their response to the question of how long until Season 3 will be received better than their brutal shut down of Enid (Myers) and Wednesday shippers.

During DECIDER’s conversation with the producing partners, Gough and Millar shared their take on the fan theories and hopes that Enid and Wednesday — the mismatched Nevermore Academy roommates who went through an enemies to friends arc in Season 1 — might someday explore a relationship that is more than just platonic.

“It’s a show about female friendship and people can read into it whatever they want, which is great. I mean, that’s the beauty of television, is people can take ownership, but they’re very much friends,” Gough said of fans reading the two characters’ relationship as romantic. “It’s really a show exploring that female friendship.”
