Prime Video is about to heat up our summer — with a series adaptation of a fan-favorite, chilling mystery book.

Based on E. Lockhart’s 2014 novel of the same name, We Were Liars centers on Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her friend group known as the Liars, who spend summers together on her grandfather’s private island in New England, per Amazon’s press release.

“The Sinclairs are American royalty—known for their good looks, old money, and enviable bond—but after a mysterious accident changes Cadence’s life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide,” the synopsis.

The series began development at Amazon back in December of 2022, with Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie serving as showrunners. Plec told Deadline in an interview published in September 2024 that they “have been in the trenches all summer up in Nova Scotia, which is doubling for Martha’s Vineyard for [them]” as they shot the series.

The teaser trailer dropped on Tuesday (May 6), which showcases a glimpse at the “mythical land where it was always summer,” that suddenly falls apart, after “something terrible” happens.

“When you’re left for dead, you want answers,” Cadence says.

We Were Liars is led on-screen by Emily Alyn Lind (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Gossip Girl), Shubahm Maheshwari, Esther McGregor (Babygirl, The Room Next Door), and Joseph Zada (who is set to star in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping) as “Liars” Cadence Sinclair Eastman, Gat Patil, Mirren Sinclair, and Johnny Sinclair Dennis, respectively. The cast is rounded out by Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse.

The release date for When We Were Liars is June 18. All eight episodes will begin streaming on the 18th.
