Mother of God!

A Virgin Mary statue burst into flames Friday during an Easter parade in Vélez-Málaga, Spain injuring two people and damaging a good portion of the statue, reports Jam Press.

According to a report, the blaze started after a candle fell on the 5’6”-tall wooden statue that was carved in the 1980s.

The blaze caused several participants to shriek with terror and flee for safety.

Officials tried to tackle the flames by beating them with their bare hands and robes.

One worshipper was also seen attempting to put out the flames by blowing on it.

Two worshippers, who have been identified as Francisco, 24, and his brother Jesús, 19, were injured in their attempt to save the statue.

“Luckily, the fire was put out thanks to the quick reactions of members of the brotherhood and with the help of a fire extinguisher provided by a Local Police patrol,” said local authorities. “We wish a speedy recovery to the two injured.”

Both brothers are now recovering from their injuries at home.

Organizers of the parade — which was canceled following the fire — said that 80 percent of the statue was damaged, however, they have deemed the statue “recoverable.”

Vélez-Málaga town hall announced that they will help pay for the restoration of the statue, reports The Mirror.

“The town hall has agreed to collaborate with the brothers and sisters of this brotherhood once the damage to the image, the mantle and the other ornamental elements of the float have been assessed by experts,” said Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferre.”We support our 19 local brotherhoods and the Association of Brotherhoods throughout the year and we believe it is important and necessary to collaborate with Pollinica and Rocío in these difficult times.”

Officials attempted to cleanse the flames by beating them with their bare hands and robes.

“They are going through and in support of maintaining and conserving the rich historical and cultural heritage of our Holy Week and our city.”

The president of the town’s association of Holy Week also added that the damage to the statue was a shame.

“It is a shame what has happened, but the important thing is that the image can be restored and that the men have not suffered serious injuries,” said Francisco Javier García del Corral.
