NextImg:Victor Wembanyama to ‘disappear from the media’ after Britney Spears slapping incident

Victor Wembanyama has gotten a taste of what the media circus is like when you’re an NBA superstar, and he’s ready for a break.

The Spurs’ No. 1 overall pick said after his second NBA Summer League game on Sunday that he would “disappear from the media” for the rest of the offseason, potentially taking a vacation and enjoying time away from the sport, per Justin Russo.

Wembanyama’s escape from the media will come on the heels of a much-publicized incident in Las Vegas when Britney Spears accused Spurs head of security Damian Smith of slapping her when she tried to approach Wembanyama.

No charges will be filed in the case, the Las Vegas police said.

“When I got back to the hotel, I didn’t forget about this, but I thought it was no big deal,” he said to reporters last Thursday. “And then [I was told] this was Britney Spears. At first, I was like, ‘No, you’re joking!’ But yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears. I never saw her face.”

Wembanyama, a generational prospect from France whose No. 1 overall selection by the Spurs created a whirlwind of excitement, said that he was ready for the chaos to die down.

“In the past month, I think basketball wasn’t even 50% of my schedule. I can’t stand it. I know it’s a special moment in my life, but I’m glad it’s over … I just wanna hoop,” Wembanyama said, per Tomer Azarly

The French center, who is 19 years old and 7-foot-3, bounced back in his second summer league game after a disappointing debut, in which he shot just 2-for-13 and got dunked on by Kai Jones.

He looked like the prince that was promised on Sunday, exploding for 27 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks against the Portland Trail Blazers as he flashed the skills that made him such a tantalizing prospect.

The NBA Summer League in Vegas will conclude on July 17.
