It appears that Victor Wembanyama might get another try at throwing a first pitch after his debacle at Yankee Stadium.
The Post confirmed that Wembanyama has an “open invitation” from the San Antonio Missions — the Double-A affiliate of the Padres — and team president Burl Yarbrough to throw out a ball before a game.
As first reported by TMZ, there is no date set yet for the potential first pitch for the No. 1 NBA Draft pick.
“The entire city of San Antonio, as you can imagine, is incredibly excited about Victor being a Spur,” the Missions told TMZ.
When Wembanyama threw out the first pitch Tuesday ahead of the Yankees’ game against the Mariners, it didn’t even land close to the strike zone — bouncing wide of the plate..
The 7-foot-4 prospect, in New York ahead of Thursday night’s draft at Barclays Center, took the subway to The Bronx, needing to duck as he entered the train car, and said it was a “really nice experience,” while adding that he enjoyed the location of the stadium in the city.
Two nights later, the Spurs completed the move that’d been long anticipated and took Wembanyama at No. 1, ahead of Alabama’s Brandon Miller and the G-League Ignite’s Scoot Henderson.
Wembanyama received a call later that evening from Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, and he grabbed the iPhone that was handed to him and said, ‘What’s up, coach?”
“I’m ready to learn, man, I’m ready to learn,” Wembanyama said while adding that he “can’t wait.”
On Friday, when he landed in San Antonio, the newest Spurs big man looked comically large as he stepped off the plane and was surrounded by people of relatively normal stature.
Wembanyama’s first opportunity to play with Popovich and the Spurs will occur during the NBA Summer League, which he has confirmed he’ll participate in.
And once that concludes, Wembanyama — who averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game for Metropolitans 92 in France — will aim to guide the Spurs to their first postseason appearance since 2018-19 and to inch the franchise closer to contention for its sixth NBA title.
