The heart-wrenching and jaw-dropping saga of Dawn Longchamp continued with the premiere of Lifetime’s V.C. Andrews’ Dawn Part 2: Secrets of the Morning. The second of four installments took Dawn (Brec Bassinger) even further out of her comfort zone by dropping her at a performing arts school in New York City. Of course the solace that she found living in the Big Apple didn’t last for long, because her nasty grandmother had the means to stir up trouble via long distance.

From there, Dawn’s life somehow took an even darker turn — yes, even darker than losing your mom to tuberculosis and immediately being forced to drop out of school, work as a maid, and endure emotional and physical abuse from your horrendous biological family. No amount of wealth is worth all of this!

Dawn’s fortunes took a turn in the final moments of Secrets of the Morning thanks to a major reveal that completely upended everything we thought we knew about the Cutler family tree. If you are having trouble digesting what just happened, or if you just need someone to commiserate with, we’re here for you.

Part 2 of Dawn Longchamp’s saga concludes with a revelation that doesn’t just shake up the Cutler family tree, it pulls it out by the roots. With the passing of terrifying matriarch Lillian Cutler (Donna Mills) comes the reading of her will. Much to the family’s surprise, Lillian’s death also means that an addendum to her late husband William’s will must also be read. Yeah — William put a P.S. on his will to be read after both he and Lillian had kicked the bucket. This news upsets Lillian’s daughter-in-law Laura Jean (Miranda Frigon) and causes her to abruptly leave the room.

It soon becomes clear why: William had a child with his son’s wife — and that child is Dawn. Not only that, but Dawn now inherits 60% of Cutler’s Cove, the family’s luxurious hotel and estate. The rest of the family will all split the 40% that belonged to Lillian. This immediately puts all the power in Dawn’s hands — and she is not interested in it. All Dawn wants to do is find her daughter Christie, the daughter that Lillian had whisked away under the dark of night immediately after birth.

You got all that? The Cutler family tree just got considerably more twisted, so let’s take a closer look at what this major reveal means for the dynasty.

As confusing as the Cutlers are, at least Part 2 clears up the mystery of Dawn’s parentage. After initially thinking she was the daughter of Randolph and Laura Jean, we learned in Part 1 that she was the result of an affair between Laura Jean and an unnamed father. The reveal in Part 2 that Dawn’s father was actually Lillian’s husband explains why Lillian hated Dawn even before she was born and why she arranged to have the baby kidnapped.

While Dawn immediately assumes that Laura Jean had an affair with William, it’s likely not that simple. Earlier in Part 2, Laura Jean called Dawn’s father a monster and later, after being accused of having an affair, told Dawn that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Whether or not William and Laura Jean’s relationship was consensual remains a mystery, but — like with every other twist in this series— we can assume the worst.

This revelation also shakes up the dynamics of the family beyond Dawn suddenly being in charge, financially. For example, the man she thought was her father is now her half-brother, and the sociopathic brats she thought were her siblings are actually her sociopathic niece and nephew. That means that Philip has gone from flirting with a classmate to forcing himself on his sister to wanting to have sex with his aunt. Just… this family. I swear.

Lastly, we end Part 2 with Dawn setting out to find her daughter Christie, the daughter she had with her music teacher/thespian/con artist played by Joey McIntyre. Dawn wants to put all of this drama behind her, including all of that Cutler money, and she wants to start a simple life with her daughter and her boyfriend Jimmy… The guy who she grew up believing to be her brother.

Dawn, honey: your family will never be simple. Who knows what revelations are in store for Dawn and viewers in Part 3!

V.C. Andrews’ Dawn Part 3: Twilight’s Child premieres on Lifetime on July 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
