The mercy rule could only do so much at the World Baseball Softball Confederation U-12 Baseball World Cup, as Team USA tipped off the spectacle in a record-breaking 43-1 win in the tournament opener over New Zealand on Friday in Taiwan.
The offense set a staggering record for a U-12 national team that will be tough to match.
But the start, things didn’t seem out of the ordinary, as the United States scored three runs in the first inning.
Things took a quick turn in the second inning, however, when the U.S. scored 11 runs, highlighted by Leyland Henry’s three-run blast.
In the third inning, it was clear the bats could not be tamed, as Team USA scored a seemingly improbable 20 runs, featuring two homers by Bryant Ju.
Ju led the way for the offense, leading the team with seven RBIs in the game.
Later, Ty Glaus, son of four-time All-Star Troy Glaus, drove in the record 30th run in the third inning, breaking the previous benchmark of 29, which was in the May World Cup Qualifiers golf-medal game against Venezuela.
Aside from the offense, Bowen Landry put in a solid outing on the mound, pitching two hitless innings along with four strikeouts.
Team USA’s Jett Schoolcraft closed out the game, allowing just one unearned run while striking out five over the last two innings.
Team USA next face Panama at 11 p.m ET on Sunday.
