UnPrisoned has been canceled at Hulu after two seasons, according to star Kerry Washington who announced the news Friday on Instagram.
The series hailed from the Onyx Collective content brand on Hulu, primarily consisting of projects from creators of color and other underrepresented groups.
“This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3. But I wanted you to hear it from me because while we’re super duper disappointed, we’re also crazy deeply grateful,” Washington wrote.
“Making this show was a labor of love. And we know that so many of you found connection and healing with The Alexander Family – and that their impact will live on! We are soooooo grateful to the entire cast & crew – who are not only brilliant and hardworking, but a JOY to work with! Thank you to our fellow producers and all our writers and directors for leading and guiding and inspiring us. Thank you to ABCS, Hulu & Onyx for giving us a creative home. And most importantly, we are grateful to YOU ALL – for watching, laughing, crying, yelling, dancing, eye-rolling, cheering (and all of the things between) along with us each episode. It was such a blessing. And we thank you ❤️ OK! I don’t want to make this all sad, so I would LOOOOOOVE if you commented below ???????? your favorite moment from the show. We shared a few of ours in this video ????”
The show, which was inspired by the life of creator Tracy McMillan, centered on a persnickety relationship therapist, social media influencer, and single mom named Paige Alexander (Washington). Paige’s life is upended when her dad Edwin Alexander (Delroy Lindo) is released from prison and moves in with her and her teenage son Finn (Faly Rakotohavana).
At the conclusion of Season 2, McMillan left the door open for a potential Season 3 that would focus on Paige’s mother. McMillan has not yet commented on the cancelation nor is there speculation that the series will be shopped elsewhere.
The series was executive produced by McMillan alongside Yvette Lee Bowser, Washington, and Lindo, as well as Pilar Savone. Joy Gorman Wettels and Jen Braeden also executive produce. The series was produced by ABC Signature.
