This was Ahmad Gardner. Before he was Sauce. Before he was an All-American. Before he was a first-round pick. Before the diamond necklace and the endorsements. Before he was even a varsity player in high school or a cornerback.
The video was taken early in Gardner’s time at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit. A baby-faced Gardner is standing inside the locker room at Michigan State. His high school coach had taken a group of players from his school to see the college and inspire them.
“Best slot receiver,” Gardner says to the camera. “Class of 2019. Making big plays. I’m going to shine my sophomore year, my junior year, my senior year, get them offers, get All-State, go to the pros.”
Gardner knew then that the NFL was in his future.
