NextImg:Tylor Megill delivers strong start as Mets cruise to win over Cardinals

The Mets got just what they needed on Friday night: a visit from the worst team in the National League.

Against the Cardinals, the Mets looked like world-beaters, as they followed up their dramatic win over the Yankees on Wednesday by cruising to a 6-1 victory over St. Louis at Citi Field for their first back-to-back wins in more than two weeks.

Tylor Megill allowed just one run in six innings and the lineup got multi-hit nights from Starling Marte, Jeff McNeil and Tommy Pham — as well as a home run from Daniel Vogelbach, who just returned to the lineup after taking a mental break.

It was all good news for the Mets, who had lost eight of their previous 10 games, as they handled the last-place Cardinals, who have lost six in a row.

Megill had pitched poorly in three of his last four starts, but was effective throughout this outing.

After Megill retired the side in order on nine pitches in the top of the first, the Mets loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the inning.

Brandon Nimmo walked leading off, followed by walks to Marte and McNeil.

The slumping Francisco Lindor then hit a comebacker that turned into a double play and the small crowd at Citi Field erupted in boos.

Brett Baty, though, bailed out Lindor with a two-run double down the first-base line to give the Mets an early lead. Pham followed with an RBI single to center to make it 3-0.

The Mets added two more runs in the third, as Marte and McNeil led off with singles, putting runners on the corners for Lindor. He hit a sacrifice fly to score Marte.

After Baty grounded out, Pham delivered his second run-scoring hit of the night, as the Mets went up, 5-0.

Megill didn’t allow a hit until Paul DeJong singled with one out in the third.

St. Louis had a chance to get back in the game in the fifth, when Willson Contreras, having a brutal first season with the Cardinals, led off with a homer.

Jordan Walker followed with a double before Megill hit Dylan Carlson with a pitch.

After pitching coach Jeremy Hefner went to the mound, Megill whiffed DeJong for the first out.

With Tommy Edman at the plate, Jordan inexplicably tried to steal third and was thrown out by Omar Narvaez for the second out.

Megill then got Edman swinging to end the threat and the Mets didn’t break a sweat the rest of the way, as Dominic Leone and Josh Walker came out of the bullpen to finish it.
