Bill Belichick is expected to have some options if he wishes to remain an NFL head coach next season.
As the Patriots finish up a season in which they will miss the playoffs for the third time out of four years since Tom Brady exited the organization, there has been much speculation that this will be Belichick’s final season on the New England sidelines.
At The Athletic on Saturday, NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that Belichick is set to have a meeting next week with Patriots owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft, with “some who work for the team who are expecting changes and have started to put out feelers about jobs elsewhere.”
She added that teams “hoping to get a chance to meet with Belichick” include the Commanders and Raiders, with others lurking “in the shadows,” pending their Week 18 results.
Belichick, 71, “wants to keep coaching.” the report said.
The Commanders, who are expected to part ways with Ron Rivera after four seasons, have been mentioned as a plausible Belichick destination for months since the new ownership group led by private equity titan and Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris purchased the team from Dan Snyder.
ProFootballTalk Mike Florio mentioned the “chatter” surrounding Belichick and the Commanders on “The Rich Eisen Show” in the fall.
The Raiders fired Belichick’s former protégé Josh McDaniels earlier this season, and have had some extra juice with interim head coach Antonio Pierce, but it still remains to be seen if Pierce will get the full-time job.
Earlier this season, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that Belichick signed a contract extension with the Patriots last offseason.
The practical implications of this are that Belichick and the Krafts could work together to reach a trade with the head coach’s next team, rather than there being an outright firing after the season, should Belichick’s time in New England actually be over.
Belichick has coached the Patriots since 2000, winning six Super Bowls and reaching three others.
He has a 386-266 record in New England heading into Sunday’s season finale against the rival Jets.
