Former President Donald Trump reportedly met with fellow billionaire Elon Musk in Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday.
Trump crossed paths with Musk and a handful of Republican donors but is hoping to have a lengthier one-on-one meeting with the electric car and space tycoon in the future, sources told the New York Times.
Specifics of the encounter were sparse.
Trump and Musk famously butt heads in 2017, when the tech guru exited two business-related councils in protest of the then-president’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords.
Musk vocally criticized some of Trump’s policies in the past. He publicly stated that he backed President Biden in 2020 over Trump and voiced support for alternatives to Trump in the 2024 Republican primary.
“I didn’t vote for Donald Trump. I actually voted for Biden. Not saying I’m a huge fan of Biden because I would think that probably would be inaccurate,” Musk told Fox News last year.
However, biographer Walter Isaacson disputed that in his book on Musk, reporting that the mogul declined to vote after “he decided that going to the polls in California, where he was then registered, was a waste of time.”
Despite clashing with Trump in the past, Musk has seemingly lurched to the right over recent years, if his frequent social media posts are any evidence.
Musk has also railed against progressive policies and has taken a particular interest in immigration.
“Ushering in vast numbers of illegals is why Secretary Mayorkas was impeached by the House. They are importing voters. This is why groups on the far left fight so hard to stop voter ID requirements, under the absurd guise of protecting the right to vote,” Musk posted on X earlier in the day Tuesday.
Musk, himself an immigrant originally from South Africa, has taken issue with the surge of illegal entries into the US.
In 2022, he shelled out a massive $44 billion to purchase Twitter, which he rebranded into X. Musk claimed the purchase was motivated by a desire to rework the microblogging platform into a bastion of free speech.
His Twitter takeover and perennial conservative-tinged social media postings have made him a darling on the political right.
Musk has also knocked some of Biden’s policies. Despite that he visited the White House in September, according to its visitor logs.
Meanwhile, Trump has been looking to court donors and bolster his war chest ahead of the expected rematch with Biden in exactly eight months.
It remains unclear whether Musk will open his coffers to Trump or back him.
