Former President Trump filed a motion to demand the proceedings in his forthcoming trial for alleged election subversion be broadcast live to the American people.
“The prosecution wishes to continue this travesty in darkness. President Trump calls for sunlight,” Trump defense attorneys John Lauro and Todd Blanche wrote in the Friday filing to federal judge Tanya S. Chutkan.
“Every person in America, and beyond, should have the opportunity to study this case firsthand and watch as, if there is a trial, President Trump exonerates himself of these baseless and politically motivated charges.”
Chutkan, who was appointed by former President Obama, has taken heat from the president’s allies over alleged liberal bias.
The judge comes from a prominent family of Jamaican Marxists.

Trump’s request, if granted, would overturn decades of precedent banning the broadcast of criminal court proceedings, according to Politico.
Special Counsel Jack Smith, who brought the charges against Trump, has opposed the effort, which is also backed by a number of media organizations keen to cover the historic trial.
In August, Trump was charged with knowingly spreading lies to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
A trial has been set for March.
