The Chiefs will be without star tight end Travis Kelce when they take the field for Thursday’s NFL season opener against the Detroit Lions, according to multiple reports.
Kelce injured his knee during Tuesday’s practice and both NFL insider Jordan Schultz and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Kelce had tried to push to play ahead of the game.
The issue isn’t expected to keep Kelce off the field for long, according to Rapoport.
Initially, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had said that Kelce had hyperextended his knee on Tuesday, but reports since then have indicated that he was dealing with a bone bruise.
Kelce is coming off a season in which he had a career-best 110 passes for 1,338 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns as the Kansas City defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
