The Chiefs still might be without their star tight end on Thursday, but it appears that Travis Kelce and fans can breathe a sigh of relief.
Kelce seems to have avoided structural damage to his knee, and the NFL Network has reported that he is dealing with a bone bruise.
The injury occurred during Monday’s practice, according to Chiefs coach Andy Reid, and NFL reporter Ian Rapoport believes that his status is in doubt for the season opener against the Lions.
“Source says that there is no structural damage here and this is not expected to be a long-term injury,” Rapoport said on Wednesday. “That said there was some swelling, I would say some real significant swelling that needs to go down in order for him to get back on the field.”
His brother, Jason Kelce, offered a similarly optimistic outlook for the Chiefs tight end, although he noted that the swelling is going to be the key decider between whether he plays against the Lions.
“I’ve done something similar when you just plant, and your knee hyperextends,” Kelce said on the WIP Morning Show in Philadelphia. “I know he’s got some swelling going on, but it sounds like as long as they can get that down, he’s gonna have a chance to go.
“The ligaments and everything are intact. Structurally, from what we know right now, his knee is fine, so really it’s about getting that swelling down and then seeing how bruised that bone is because if you have ever had those, they can be pretty painful.”
If the swelling does not subside enough and he is unable to go, Noah Gray figures to step into a substantial target share for Kansas City as the second tight end on the depth chart.
Blake Bell could also see some targets for the Chiefs as the backup to Gray, while receivers Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore get plenty of action running routes for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
