Manager Torey Lovullo appeared to channel his inner Andrew W.K. as he implored his Diamondbacks to “party” they swept the Brewers in the best-of-3 National League Wild Card Series on Wednesday.
Lovullo gave a rousing postgame speech in the visiting locker room after the Diamondbacks defeated the Brewers 5-2 at American Family Field to advance to the NLDS, setting Arizona up for a date with the Dodgers in the NLDS.
“Alright, are you f–king kidding me?!” Lovullo said. “Listen, this is part of the journey. We’re not there yet. Let’s enjoy it. Let’s embrace it. Let’s f–king party! And a connected team is a f–king dangerous team. We are f–king dangerous.
“Let’s f–king party all night”
The champagne began to fly immediately after that as the Diamondbacks celebrated the accomplishment, which is their first trip to the NLDS since 2017, when they also took on the Dodgers, getting swept in three games.
For the second straight game, Arizona fell behind early — this time going down 2-0 in the first — but flipped their fortunes in the sixth when they took the lead on a two-run single by Ketel Marte.
Things got dicey in the eighth, though, as Milwaukee loaded the bases before lefty reliever Andrew Saalfrank worked out of the jam with a groundout of Willy Adames.
And, with the tying run up with two runners on in the ninth, former Mets reliever Paul Sewald closed things out with a strikeout of William Contreras.
The Diamondbacks will get two days off before the NLDS begins out in Los Angeles on Saturday, with the game time yet to be announced.
After the first two games in California, the best-of-5 series will shift to Arizona for Game 3 on Wednesday.
