A disappointing first season back in The Bronx for Tommy Kahnle ended Monday when the right-hander was placed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.
The move came after Kahnle suffered through a rough outing Sept. 20 in a 6-1 loss to Toronto.
Kahnle walked four batters and gave up two runs.
After signing a two-year, $11.5 million deal to come back to the Yankees in the offseason following his successful comeback from Tommy John surgery, the 34-year-old missed the first two months of the regular season with right biceps tendinitis.
He did not yield a run in his first 17 appearances of the season, but hitters eventually adjusted to Kahnle’s changeup-heavy arsenal and his struggles began in mid-July.
Kahnle had several rough stretches throughout the second half before a recent solid eight-game stretch when he didn’t allow a run over 10 innings.
He finished 1-3 with a 2.66 ERA spanning 40 2/3 innings.
The righty was replaced on the roster by Matt Bowman, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Kahnle’s rough 2023 adds another question to the Yankees’ bullpen, with key arms like Jonathan Loaisiga and Wandy Peralta also dealing with injuries.
