Jenna Bush Hager recounted an “outrageous” story on Today With Jenna & Friends about an experience she had in middle school that caused her to be insecure about her appearance.
Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie were discussing whether they could pull off a recent fashion trend dubbed the “diaper short” when she revealed that she used to have a personal “rule” against wearing shorts that showed the birthmark on her thigh. The Today host went on to reveal that she developed this insecurity after a boy broke up with her in middle school after seeing it.
“I have a birthmark – which you’ve seen, you’ve seen me in all sorts of areas,” she said to Guthrie on the show. “And I had a boyfriend who broke up with me in the seventh grade because he saw me in a bathing suit because of my birthmark.”
After Guthrie called that “outrageous,” Bush Hager admitted it gave her “a lot of [PTSD].”
Guthrie then asked her longtime friend if she wanted to show the birthmark to the viewers.
“Do y’all wanna see it?” Bush Hager asked. She did not hesitate to get up and show off the birthmark on her leg as she announced, “This is actually me reclaiming that time!”

She and Guthrie shared a laugh as she took her seat and added, “Wow. Never thought I’d do that, but here we go!”
The former first daughter has opened up before on the show about her experience being dumped in the seventh grade after they saw her in a bathing suit. She once told Hoda Kotb, “It’s so interesting because people really do hit you right where it hurts.”
“I feel like even sometimes now when I feel great — I have three kids, three C-sections, I feel really in my body and I think of it as a beautiful thing — I’ll walk in a pool and have a moment,” she said.
Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
