Jenna Bush Hager spoke out in support of her home state of Texas during Monday’s broadcast of Today With Jenna & Friends, where devastating floods have claimed the lives of over 80 people so far.
“Our hearts are heavy this morning,” she said.
One area of Texas that was tragically impacted by the flood was Camp Mystic where 27 children and counsellors are confirmed to be dead. Bush Hager appeared emotional as she revealed her mother once worked as a counselor at Camp Mystic, which she described to be a “spiritual, beautiful place.”
She continued, “There is a camp that my mom actually was a counselor at called Camp Mystic which many of my friends went to. It sort of was a place that raised so many girls to become women.”
Bush Hager then turned to her guest host Dwayne Wade as she said, “As parents, we think about the horror of sending our kids to a place that is supposed to be – and is – healing, and fun and joyful, and all of the things that kids deserve to have.”
The Today host shared on the broadcast that it was difficult to send her kids their summer camps that weekend as the state continues recovering from the “devastating” flood.
“We send our kids into the world with the faith that they can have happy lives, joyful lives. As adults, we know pain, we hope our kids never face it,” she said.
Bush Hager’s parents, former U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, issued a statement expressing their remorse over the floods. “On this day of prayer, Laura and I are holding up our fellow Texans who are hurting,” they said.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of life and the agony so many are feeling,” they wrote. “Those who have lost their precious children are facing a grief no parents should ever know. We are grateful to the first responders and volunteers who are working to find the missing and comfort the grieving at Camp Mystic and along the Guadalupe. We know our words cannot help, but we believe the prayers of so many Americans will.”
Bush Hager directed viewers hoping to help the relief efforts in Texas to find resources at RedCross.org.
“Texas is an incredible, resilient state. Y’all know I’m a homesick Texan living in New York and it always is in my heart,” she said.
