NextImg:TNT’s scorebug predicted Bruins’ playoff doom 30 seconds early

They were only 30 seconds early.

TNT’s scorebug mistakenly flashed “GOAL” alongside the Panthers logo to indicate the team scored with 1:27 left in the third period of Game 7 of their series with the Bruins Sunday night.

Florida trailed 3-2 at time and were 87 seconds away from their season ending.

But TNT turned out to be prescient, as Brandon Montour ripped a slap shot past Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman with 59.3 seconds left, beating the backup short side.

“The TNT score bug needs to concentrate on stock tips,” one user tweeted.

“I blame the TNT scorebug operator for Florida tying it,” another user tweeted.

Of course, among the jokes there were some who suggested that the NHL had rigged the game, and the Panthers’ game-tying and eventual winning overtime goal were all a part of a script.

There are certainly no shortage of reasons to suggest the NHL’s incompetence, though intentionally eliminating one of your biggest markets for the Panthers seems a bit much for the league.

Montour’s goal forced overtime before Carter Verhaeghe ripped a wrist shot home to win it for the Panthers.

“The fact that we were able to do what we did after what they did all year … they’re an unreal team and the best I’ve played in my NHL career. The fact that we were able to beat them was crazy,” Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk said. “Let’s be honest: Nobody in the whole world thought we were going to win that series except for the guys in that room.”

The Bruins set an NHL record with 135 points in the regular season en route to winning the Presidents’ Trophy.

The dream run seemed set to continue after rolling to a 3-1 series lead over Florida before their season shockingly ended with three straight losses, including two in overtime.

“It was an honor to coach that group,” said Bruins coach Jim Montgomery, who took over in Boston this year after Bruce Cassidy was fired.

“I know we didn’t get to where we wanted. I get that. But their professionalism, their work ethic, their commitment to being pros. It was a joy to be around.”

The Panthers will now take on the Maple Leafs in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with Game 1 set for Tuesday night in Toronto.
