It is always a concern for any rookie making his NFL debut. Will it be too big for them?
There is pedigree and big-game college experience to use as evidence to suggest whether a youngster has what it takes to compete at the next level.
But until the player steps onto the field and gets it done, his readiness is unknown.
The Giants will feature three rookies in starting roles: cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins, and center John Michael Schmitz.
Jalin Hyatt, a third-round pick from Tennessee, is expected to see plenty of action at wide receiver, and running back Eric Gray will serve as the kickoff and punt returner.
Hyatt once caught five touchdown passes in a game against Alabama.
He believes he can handle what comes next as the Giants open their season Sunday night against the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.
“That goes back to the college I came from,’’ Hyatt told The Post. “Every time we’re going out there, 100K-plus in the stands. Really, every game we had at Tennessee was a big game. Coming up here and being here for the New York Giants and playing at MetLife and knowing the fans here, everybody wants to win, that’s the expectation, that’s our expectation in the locker room.
“We’re going against Dallas, first game. I’m definitely going to be fired up. I’m going to have those feelings of ‘first game.’ I’m not saying I won’t have them, but at the same time I know what’s at risk, I feel like I’ve been in big games before. I just can’t wait to go out there with my teammates, can’t wait to go out with D.J. [Daniel Jones] and the leaders on this team. It’s gonna be fun, something I’ve always wanted to experience in my career.’’
General manager Joe Schoen created nearly $2 million in additional salary-cap space to use during the season by using standard contract adjustments for DL Dexter Lawrence and LB Bobby Okereke.
The base salaries for both players in 2023 was dropped to the league minimum $1.08 million, converting money into signing bonuses for Lawrence and Okereke.
The Cowboys are dealing with an injury issue on their offensive line, as Tyler Smith, the starting left guard, has a strained hamstring and is listed as doubtful.
Chuma Edoga, a 2019 third-round pick of the Jets, is the likely replacement. … The expectation is that Taiwan Jones will be elevated from the practice squad to make his Giants debut.
Jones, 35, is listed as a running back, but is actually a special teams specialist, with just 53 rushing attempts in 12 NFL seasons.
This is being called a “Blue Out’’ game by the Giants.
Blue rally towels will be given out and the first 25,000 fans will receive blue “Be Giant” T-shirts.
Last year, the Giants unveiled the “Our Way” campaign during the playoffs.
Can the importance of winning Game 1 be overstated?
Well, there is historical evidence that going 1-0 is a strong indicator of season success.
The 57 Super Bowl winners have a record of 46-10-1 in the first game of the next season.
Since 2002, when the NFL expanded to 32 teams, those that won their season-opener have been more than twice as likely to reach the playoffs than teams that lost the season opener.
