NextImg:Thom Brennaman at peace with new life after on-air slur cost him career: ‘Would not change’ it

Thom Brennaman would admittedly love another chance at calling major league baseball games again, but he’s “at total peace” if the opportunity never arises again.

Brennaman had been a longtime NFL and MLB broadcaster until he upended his career by dropping a homophobic slur on a hot mic during a break on an August 19, 2020 broadcast of a Cincinnati Reds game.

Brennaman hasn’t worked another professional sports broadcast since and his only on-air work has been calling Roberto Clemente League games in Puerto Rico and high school sports in Cincinnati.

But the 60-year-old doesn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him over the way things have transpired.

“I’m the most blessed human being in the world,” Brennaman said recently on “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich”. “My wife and I got to do things we’d never get to do.”

The broadcaster has made amends for his choice of words on that August day and he said that he’s met with prominent LGBTQ figures in sports, such as former major leaguer Billy Bean and OutSports co-founder Cyd Zeigler.

Brennaman said that they’ve forgiven him.

He had offered an on-air apology during the game after his comment went viral, but the apology produced an equally viral moment as he paused in the middle of it to somberly call a Nick Castellanos home run.

While Brennaman would like another shot in a broadcast booth, he explained during the interview that he’s been happy with how his life has gone since 2020.

“I was going all the way til almost November [with baseball], and then you roll right into football,” Brennaman said. “There is no doubt this happened for a reason. I really believe it’s part of a bigger plan. I may not like the timing of the plan, and I try to do my best not to think I’m smarter than God above. At the end of the day, when all is said and done, I’m good, totally good. And been totally blessed through this whole thing.

“I would not change the last three years of my life to have my career back.”

Whether another opportunity for Brennaman to call Major League Baseball or the NFL again comes up remains to be seen.
