This St. John’s season has been defined as “once in a lifetime,” a “generational” year, something that should be appreciated because of how rare it is.

It has been unexpected. Nobody could’ve predicted the Red Storm rising to seventh in the country and clinching their first outright Big East regular-season crown in 40 years.

But I don’t see this as an anomaly, as some kind of fluke season. It won’t be a one-off. Not with Rick Pitino in place, the financial backing he has from billionaire Mike Repole and others, and the expected return of star big man Zuby Ejiofor.

There is a world in which RJ Luis Jr. returns as well, giving the Johnnies (26-4, 17-2 Big East) two top 25 players in the country next year. Luis will test the NBA draft waters, but in such a loaded year, the dynamic 6-foot-7 wing could decide it is worth it to go back to school with his close friend Ejiofor and further reap the benefits of Name, Image & Likeness. Another season refining his game under Pitino and making a run at a Final Four is certainly a possibility.
