NextImg:This Shane Gillis bit about ‘CouplaBeers’ is being called ‘the best SNL skit in 20 years’

Anyone need CouplaBeers?

Over the weekend, Shane Gillis did a skit on “Saturday Night Live” called “CouplaBeers” where he played a man advertising a new medication that treats anxiety and depression.

The bit is being praised online by viewers, including one fan who deemed it a contender for “the best SNL skit in the last 20 years.”

The sketch begins with Gillis, 37, watching his wife (Heidi Gardner) and their son leave the house, as he turns to the camera and begins advocating for CouplaBeers.

“You wouldn’t know it, but a few months ago, anxiety and depression were ruining my life,” Gillis says. “I was struggling at work, I was struggling as a father, and I was struggling as a husband.”

Gillis is shown being made fun of by his coworkers, yelling at his son from the stands at a baseball game, and ignoring his wife while she talks to him.

“I was at a real low point,” he says. “That’s when i talked to my doctor about CouplaBeers.”

Gillis described CouplaBeers as “a revolutionary medicine that treats anxiety and depression fast. Within minutes of taking it, I’m back to my old self.”

While holding a can of CouplaBeers, Gillis — whose “confidence is through the roof” now — tells his son he loves him at the baseball game, pants one of his coworkers while hitting on another, and tells his wife she’s “beautiful.”

“The way it works is simple. CouplaBeers quickly turns a cloudy, rainy day into a sunny one. It’s that easy. Now I’m the me I wanna be,” Gillis explains.

The comedian also says CouplaBeers is “clinically proven treatment for conditions like boredom, depression, winter, museum, hangovers, affair, and moderate to severe Italian wife.”

“If you miss a dose of CouplaBeers, don’t worry, you won’t. Brother you will never miss a dose. It’s kinda the only thing you really remember after a while, is to take it,” he adds.

But Gillis warns that drowsiness is a common side effect of CouplaBeers. Luckily, he says that another medication, “aLilBump,” can fix that problem.

“Once the drowsiness of CouplaBeers sets in, you take aLilBump and let the medication do its thing,” Gillis explains, as he’s shown storming on the field at his son’s baseball to argue with the ref, vacuuming his house, and furiously typing on his computer at work.

Gillis adds, “So if you’re ready to get your life back, talk to your doctor about CouplaBeers. Maybe even aLilBump.”

Gillis’ bit is then interrupted by his wife, played by Gardner, 41, who is sitting on the couch with his coworkers and his parents.

“Honey, can you come sit down? We need to talk,” she says.

Gillis, who isn’t wearing pants, looks at the group and then back at the camera and says, “No.”

“Mom and dad…what are you guys doing here?” Gillis asks at the end of the sketch.

Since the episode aired, “SNL” viewers have been applauding the CouplaBeers sketch on social media.

“LOLing at the Couplabeers/Lilbump sketch on #SNL. Legitimately the first time this season I’ve laughed out loud multiple times this season,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“Shane Gillis #SNL skit: instant classic. #couplabeers,” another fan said.

A third viewer tweeted, “CouplaBeers is hilarious.”

“The CouplABeers was very funny,” a different fan wrote.

Gillis hosted “SNL” for the second time after being fired from the show in 2019 for homophobic and racist slurs that resurfaced. He apologized for his comments and was invited back to the show to host an episode in Feb. 2024.
