NextImg:This hydrating hair trio was the ménage à trois my thirsty locks longed for

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have dry, damaged hair. I can, however, remember when I started throwing money at every product that promised to make my locks luxuriously shiny and strong.

From Brazilian blowouts that burned my scalp to DIY recipes I followed from YouTube (one involved onions), I’ve done it all, which is why I was skeptical about Coco & Eve’s latest drop: The Pro Bond Shampoo & Conditioner Set, and Pro Bond Hair Mask.

The promise? To strengthen hair and smooth — all while repairing broken hair bonds and adding back shine. But in my experience, if a product (or products, in this case) sounds too good to be true, it typically is.

Coco & Eve

Pros:

Cons:

Loved for its hair products and self-tanner, Coco & Eve’s recently launched Bond Therapy Collection is already generating buzz for its clinical results and real-life before and afters. The Pro Bond Shampoo and Pro Bond Conditioner have a Cutibond Repair Complex — science-speak for a Glucose-based technology that makes ionic and hydrogen bonds within hair’s keratin. The result? Stronger hair. Vegetable-based protein ingredients coat the surface for a protective shine.

Not to be outdone, the Pro Bond Hair Mask uses the same strengthening technology and contains moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and argan oil. The intensive treatment rebuilds inner hair bonds, reinforcing them to become stronger and less prone to breakage. Ideal for those with chemically treated hair (or folks who love their heat styling tools like I do), each product is designed to repair and revitalize strands that have been put through the wringer.

As a general rule of thumb, I’m skeptical about promises from companies, especially when hair is concerned. I mean, I’ve been disappointed a lot, so that makes sense, right?

But the way I figure it, finding the right hair product is sort of like dating: you have to experience the meh, bad, and the oh-my-gawd-what-was-I-thinking to find those hidden gems that make the previous failures worth it.

Here’s my hair before trying The Pro Bond Shampoo & Conditioner Set and Pro Bond Mask.

In my opinion, not bad but not great — definitely dry (especially in the second photo) because that’s how my hair has always been.

Every problem one could have with their hair, I have. Fly aways? Checks. Frizz? Check? Fine? Yep.  Split ends? Typically, though, I did just get my hair trimmed recently. While I had higher hopes for the hair mask, I was timid about the shampoo and conditioner, as many I’ve tried have weighed down my strands or left them feeling straw-like. I had no reason to believe this would be any different.

So, according to the site, the Cutibond Repair Complex Technology is what makes the Shampoo and conditioner magical. It’s what repairs the broken hair bonds and what creates more.

All of this is hard to verify, obviously, without trying each product firsthand, so I hopped in the shower with the products and my phone nearby for pics.

In terms of texture, the shampoo was fairly standard. Not too light, not too heavy, and with a decent lather — though I did do two applications. I did notice that my scalp felt cleaner, and that less hair came out during the rinsing process.

The conditioner was right up my alley. Lightweight enough not to weigh my fine hair down, but moisturizing enough that I could feel my curls becoming softer as I worked the product in.

Following the directions, I allowed the conditioner to stay in for 1 minute (perfect amount of time to pumice stone my feet), and then I went to the Pro Bond Hair Mask, which I was most excited about.

Full transparency, I love a hair mask. Some of them can be heavy, which I don’t love, so I’ve become quite discerning over the years.

It’s all about finding the one that’s as hydrating as a vat of Vaseline and as lightweight as a scoop of Cool Whip. As you can imagine, it’s difficult, but somehow the folks at Coco & Eve cracked the code.

I literally gasped over the buttery but light texture of this mask. Holly J Coley

In terms of texture, it’s like a 2.0 version of your best conditioner. It’s whipped like a body butter and melts into your strands. I’ve tried other hair masks and have known as soon as I slathered them on my head, they would be a pain to rinse out, but not the Pro Bond Hair Mask. I felt my hair becoming softer without being weighed down by the product.

I left it in for five minutes (as directed), and found it rinsed out easily, and like the shampoo and conditioner, I noticed that there was less (way less) shedding, and that my hair actually felt less fragile as I was wringing it out.

If you don’t have fine hair or have never experienced hair loss, it may be hard to imagine hair feeling strong or weak, but the latter basically makes you feel like you’ll pull out clumps if you brush, dry, or do anything without the most delicate touch.

Once I dried my hair, it was time to style it with my plethora of heat tools — I’ve got to be me. The end result?

Honestly, I was impressed. Holly J Coley

Silky hair, all going in the same direction, feeling stronger, healthier, and shinier. Even two of my coworkers, unaware of the review I was working on, told me how good it looked when I bumped into them later that day. “Coco & Eve,” I exclaimed!

While the asking price for the set ($56, $47.60) is more than I’d typically spend, the nearly 10 fluid ounce bottles will last for months. Similarly, the mask ($39) is a bit more than the $2 packets I grab at Duane Reade. However, a little goes a long way, and the results are as real as the compliments I earned.

Do I fully understand how the Bond Therapy Collection’s technology works? No, but it works.

I’m not a huge fan of the coconut-y floral fragrance, but that’s a matter of preference, as other people who gave it a sniff gave it their thumbs up. I did find it less pronounced during use, and the dry down is very lovely — think clean, with a dash of creamy sandalwood.

But I’m sort of burying the lede, because The Pro Bond Shampoo & Conditioner Set and Pro Bond Mask is 100% worth a try. After using it only once, my hair looks and feels completely rejuvenated. A few more goes, and it will probably look like I’ve been downing all the protein shakes and collagen supplements I can get my hands on.
