Whoopi Goldberg gave a heated reply to Donald Trump on this morning’s episode of The View, delivering a takedown of Trump’s recent video boasting about his role in ending Roe v. Wade. The one-term POTUS released a clip on Truth Social this morning about his stance on abortion rights in America, during which he said he was “proudly responsible” for the Supreme Court overturning Roe in 2022.
After playing part of Trump’s message — including a bit in which he accuses Democrats of “supporting abortion up to, and even beyond, the ninth month” — Goldberg took a dramatic pause, the addressed the studio with exasperation.
“Can I just point out that normally after the ninth month, the baby is born. You do also know that it is against the law past quite a bit … nobody is doing that,” she said.
“I’m not sure I understand. And you’re bragging about this,” Goldberg continued. “Fifty years, I’ve had this right. And here you’ve snatched this right out of my hands. You’ve taken my right as a woman to make decisions about myself, and you’re bragging to me and you want me to give you my vote?”
Later in the segment, she said that she hopes nobody has to endure the difficulty of undergoing an abortion, but anyone who does has her full support.
“No one is obligated to have an abortion. So you never have to have one. And I hope no one ever has to have one,” Goldberg proclaimed. “But if you find yourself in a position where you have to, I want to make sure — and I’m way past having kids — I want to make sure that if you decide this is what you need to do, I’m going to get behind you.”
Goldberg also shut down religious defense of an abortion ban during the Hot Topics chat. She reminded the panel, “It’s not mentioned in the [Ten Commandments], I’m just gonna say.”
When Sunny Hostin replied, “Evangelicals would say ‘Thou shalt not kill,'” Goldberg had a retort for that, too: “Well here’s the thing. I think ‘Thou shalt not kill’ cannot be used as the block because we allow wars all the time,” she said.
Hostin agreed, chiming in, “We allow the death penalty. We allow guns,” as Goldberg added, “Either ‘Thou shalt not kill’ for everybody and everything, or we have to talk about all the things that you and I need to do.”
