Erik Jensen, who played Dr. Stephen Edwards on the fifth season of The Walking Dead, has been diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer just one year after surviving a brain aneurysm, his family revealed in a GoFundMe.

The actor — who is described as a “profoundly hardworking, generous artist” — is looking to raise $300,000 to help with medical and living costs. While the cancer has spread to his liver, doctors believe they can shrink the tumors enough to perform “two major surgeries” to remove them.

“He is one of the most hardworking, loving, truthful and devoted people we know,” the fundraiser reads. “He needs to help his daughter grow up. He needs to stick around for the beautiful community he and [his wife] Jess have built. And he has a lot more art to make in the world.”

Because of the dual Hollywood strikes, treatments not covered by insurance and the “additional expenses associated with intensive treatment,” Jensen’s family is looking to “completely replace their household income for at least the next year.” They are also at risk of losing their insurance in 2025 as Jensen may be “recovering from major surgery during the exact earnings period to qualify for SAG insurance.” Both he and his wife have further asked those in a position to hire them for a WGA job to reach out.

“Stage IV is not a death sentence, and Erik is working incredibly hard to stay positive and fight for the shot that his doctors say he has,” his family writes. “While hearing this news can be scary — if you reach out after reading this, the family would greatly appreciate communications of success stories, positivity and hope.”

Following the announcement, Jensen’s Walking Dead family has shown their support on social media.

“Never had the chance to work with Erik… until now anyway,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, shared. “Only have heard many things about what a great guy he is. I do know he and his could use some help…. Of any and all kind. xojd”

The show’s chief content officer Scott Gimple also retweeted the GoFundMe link. He wrote, “One of TWD’s own could use a little help. Erik Jensen, who played Dr. Steven Edwards in S5 was just diagnosed with cancer, and it’s a time of great uncertainty for him and his family.”

Jensen has also appeared in shows like Law & Order, The Blacklist and For Life.
