Joy Behar suffered a gruesome injury a couple of years ago, she revealed on this morning’s episode of The View.
After spending yet another episode dissecting Vice President Kamala Harris‘ loss to Donald Trump in the election, the co-hosts turned their attention to chef Alex Guarnaschelli, who hosted a cooking segment on the hit daytime talk show to promote her new cookbook Italian American Forever.
At one point, Ana Navarro asked Guarnaschelli for tips on how to properly cut a squash — but Behar quickly chimed in with her own kitchen nightmare story.
“A couple of years ago, I got what they call avocado hand,” she told the group. “Be very careful when you cut an avocado. I stabbed myself, I had to go to the hospital.”
“There is a thing called avocado hand, a lot of people do it,” Behar added. “A lot of stupid people like me.”
For those who don’t know, avocado hand is when you accidentally cut your hand while trying to remove an avocado pit with a knife, according to Northwestern Medicine.
Behar previously opened up about the 2018 incident after missing an episode of The View.
“Saturday night … I stabbed myself in the hand with a knife,” she told the audience when she returned, per ABC News. “I stuck the knife into the pit [of the avocado] to get it out. I never had pain quite so intense, it was awful.”

According to Behar, her doctor told her that “avocado hand” is a common injury.
“The doctor said, ‘Oh, we get this all the time,’ ” she explained at the time, per Food Network. “So anytime you’re holding the item and you try to cut it, you can get this. So, what happened was I guess there must have been infection, they put me in the hospital overnight.”
It looks like pre-made guacamole is the way to go!
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
