Just a couple of days after Chris Rock‘s live Netflix special, The View has weighed in with their thoughts on the way the comedian addressed the infamous slap heard ’round the world.

Rock became the talk of the town at last year’s Oscars after a GI: Jane joke made at Jada Pinkett Smith‘s expense prompted Will Smith to storm the stage and smack him across the face. For the first time in one year, he publicly acknowledged the infamous moment, placing much of the blame on Pinkett Smith, who revealed she had an “entanglement” with her son’s friend during an episode of Red Table Talk.

“She hurt him way more than he hurt me,” Rock said during the Netflix special, earlier joking that The Slap “still hurts,” although we’ll never see him refer to himself as a “victim.”

Meanwhile, the ladies of The View, who have been commenting on this incident for the last year, took to the Hot Topics table to praise Rock’s reaction.

“It’s taken him a year to respond. He responded in a $40 million Netflix special, which I think is brilliant,” Sunny Hostin said. “And that was his truth. That’s how he experienced it.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin added that Rock “nailed it.” She said, “I thought he came back swinging — no pun intended. But I did think that it’s smart that he waited a year.”

She continued, “Comedians oftentimes grapple with things different than other people do. And I think him turning back to comedy was the way to do it, take the narrative back and the whole thing is super funny.”

Ana Navarro said she believes he’s “entitled to say his truth” and was “even happier that he’s making money out of it.” While she thinks the timing lined up perfectly with next weekend’s Academy Awards, she noted that the show was “funny as hell” and it had her “on the floor laughing.”

Even Whoopi Goldberg went on to profess her love for the comedian.

“There is very little that Chris Rock will do that I don’t appreciate,” she said. “He doesn’t pull punches, he says what he thinks, and he takes the consequences. He’s not afraid of saying how he feels and I know that that is not always easy. “

While she doubts the two actors are going to go “running toward each other,” Goldberg added that she would still like to see them in a movie together because she thinks they’d be “funny as hell.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
