As protests against ICE raids and President Donald Trump‘s immigration policies continue in Los Angeles, Sunny Hostin and the rest of the ladies on The View are questioning whether it was necessary for the POTUS to deploy 700 U.S. Marines and 4,000 National Guardsman to combat the crisis.
According to Whoopi Goldberg — whose entire family lives in LA — the protests were “peaceful for days” until Trump sent additional law enforcement and “flipped everybody out.” Hostin, for her part, said she “heard the same thing” from the people she’s spoken to.
“I spoke to five people who live in LA, work in LA and they said these protests were very, very orderly, they weren’t violent, and they occurred in about a four-block radius. We all know how large LA is,” she said. “In my view, there is no crisis in Los Angeles that ICE did not cause. That is the fact of the matter.”
The protests started when ICE raids began targeting undocumented residents and workers last Friday (June 6). While the protests have been largely peaceful, there have also been incidents of clashes between some demonstrators and local law enforcement (rocks have been thrown at police officers, cars have been set on fire, and businesses have been looted, for example).
California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused Trump of trying to “manufacture chaos” for his own political gain by deploying the military to Los Angeles to stop the protests, per Time.

“U.S. Marines have served honorably across multiple wars in defense of democracy. They are heroes. They shouldn’t be deployed on American soil facing their own countrymen to fulfill the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial President,” Newsom wrote on X. “This is un-American.”
However, Hostin — who warned of a potential “civil war” in Monday’s (June 9) episode of The View —believes Trump is masterminding a bigger plan.
“Trump is militarizing that state as a test run to make sure that he can do it in places like New York, that he can do it in other sanctuary cities,” she said. “There is a plan to this, in my view.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
