Free speech was a major topic of conversation on this morning’s episode of The View.
In light of conservative activist Charlie Kirk‘s assassination last week, Attorney General Pam Bondi told The Katie Miller Podcast that the government will “target” or “go after” anyone engaging in hate speech. Upon facing backlash, Bondi later clarified her comments in an X post, writing, “Hate speech that crosses the line into threats of violence is NOT protected by the First Amendment. It’s a crime.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin, who found Bondi’s threats “very concerning,” felt that going after the freedom of speech is counterproductive to the message Kirk was spreading.
“I also know Charlie Kirk, who they’re doing this in honor of, was somebody who rabidly opposed cracking down on free speech,” she said. “He defended the right that you do have to engage in speech that may be hateful. So, it’s not in line with the legacy he would’ve wanted to leave.”
Sara Haines felt similarly, citing an X post in which Kirk, before his death, wrote, “There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.”
Haines told her co-hosts, “We’re talking about the government right now speaking about free speech. People at the highest levels of leadership have said this death has been politicized. I would argue it’s also politicizing it when you go against the very spirit of Charlie Kirk.”
She added, “This man was out there speaking and disagreeing with people to protect speech so I don’t think people should weaponize his memory or his life by politicizing free speech.”
However, Griffin made sure to point out the “distinction between the government wanting to crack down on speech and consequence culture,” referring to those who have lost their jobs for publicly celebrating Kirk’s murder.

“Companies do not have to keep you on payroll if you say something that’s out of step with their values,” she said. “When I do see some of these videos—they’re on TikTok, they’re mostly young people— celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk, it’s horrific, it’s wrong, check your soul, look inward. You are not entitled to have a job because you could not hold those feelings in and you put it out there. You have a right to say it but you’re not entitled to keep or job or not be chastised in your community.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
