Caitlin Clark can count The View‘s Hot Topics table among her legions of fans. The WNBA star was backed by the co-hosts on this morning’s show after facing vitriol for her comments to Time on Wednesday (Dec. 11) after she was chosen as the publication’s 2024 Athlete of the Year.
Clark, who was also named the WNBA’s 2024 rookie of the year, has riled up some conservatives with remarks she made about white privilege at the “A Year in Time” event in New York City earlier this week.
“I know what this league was about. And like I said, it’s only been around 25-plus years, so I know there’s been so many amazing Black women that have been in this league, and continuing to uplift them I think is very important, and that’s something I’m very aware of,” Clark said at the event, in part.
As Joy Behar noted on today’s show, Clark’s words had some on the right “accusing her of ‘bowing to the woke mob’ for acknowledging her privilege.”
But nobody at the Hot Topics table saw it that way. Alyssa Farah Griffin said people are constantly trying to put Clark “into this box to fight a battle that she didn’t even sign up to.”
She told her co-hosts, “Every time she’s given a microphone, she’s a great spokesperson for the WNBA, she raises up other players, she’s always bringing other women up around her. It’s not just about her.
“She acknowledges the people who came before her and it’s like, again and again it feels like the media wants her to have some kind of fight that she’s not going to be in,” Griffin added.
Sara Haines agreed, saying, “Someone wants her to mess up in her answers, and she’s in the right place in this.”
As for Behar, she offered some constructive criticism to anyone bothered by Clark’s remarks: “Some of these white people need to get a grip on themselves!” she exclaimed.
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
