This morning, the ladies of The View launched into a discussion of the missing OceanGate submersible and its chilling parallels to the Titanic shipwreck, with Joy Behar claiming the famous boat went down back in 1912 thanks to “stupidity.”

What initially began as a conversation about the missing five individuals aboard the vanished vessel turned into a discussion about physical risk-taking.

Despite having loved ones who enjoy taking risks (for Alyssa Farah Griffin, her husband, and for Sunny Hostin, her son), none of the ladies said they share the desire, especially Behar, who admittedly “really doesn’t understand.”

“I don’t understand physical risks, particularly. I really don’t,” she said. Behar questioned why those interested in the Titanic wreck can’t just look at pictures of the site instead of heading 12,500 feet underwater.

Behar brought up that while the submersible has “been certified to withstand 1,300 meters of depth… the Titanic wreckage is 3,800 meters,” which she calls a “tipoff.” She then began to joke about what she has deemed her own “risks.”

“I mean, I’ve gotten up in front of audiences drunk at two in the morning to do stand-up. That’s a risk that I took. But to actually go underwater?” Behar joked.

The focus of the chat then transitioned to 1997’s Titanic, both the film itself and filmmaker James Cameron’s “fascination” with the research.

“[Cameron] said … ‘You only have a certain amount of days on this Earth,'” Sara Haines said, noting that the famed director made the movie because “he was so fascinated by the sea and underwater,” and adding, “he said that you want to see the edges of humanity and go down as deep as you can.”

Behar then shared, “It’s interesting because the Titanic itself went down because of human incompetence and stupidity… according to the movie.”

She added, “And the same with this!,” referring to the missing submersible. “That’s the irony of it. They’re going to see the same thing that’s happening to them. It’s very sad and scary.”

Whoopi Goldberg offered words of hope for those missing in the vessel, which first vanished on Sunday (June 18). She told the panel, “I’m just going to say a prayer for everybody. That’s where I’m at with it.”
