Disney may not be too happy with Joy Behar after hearing her NSFW take on The Little Mermaid — a movie she’s clearly never seen — during this morning’s episode of The View.
The conversation came up during a Hot Topics segment about the movie’s composer, Alan Menken, who is choosing to alter some of the lyrics in “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Kiss the Girl” for the upcoming live-action remake to “reflect a more modern view on women’s consent and female empowerment.”
While Sunny Hostin was in favor of changing the message in “Poor Unfortunate Souls” — which Ursula sings as she’s attempting to convince Ariel to sign her voice over for a pair of legs — she couldn’t quite understand why the lyrics in “Kiss the Girl” also had to be changed.
“With ‘Kiss the Girl,’ she gave her voice away so she could have legs,” Hostin said, before later asking, “How do you consent when you can’t talk?”
Meanwhile, Behar chimed in with her own thoughts on the situation.
“So wait a minute, when this consent thing happens, she had legs?” she inquired. “Because I was thinking as a mermaid, how far could it go? It could go to second base, that’s it.”
After Whoopi Goldberg cheekily clarified to the panel that The Little Mermaid is, in fact, an animated film, Behar went on to disclose her “gripe against Disney.” However, she was sure to note that she was treading dangerous waters as Disney is the parent company to ABC, the broadcast home of The View.
“I’ll probably get fired for this,” she joked, but forged ahead anyway: “I just want to say that the worst of all of the cartoons was Bambi. When that mother was killed, I had an asthma attack and I don’t have asthma,” she said.
Behar continued, “That was too violent. Very upset. And I object.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
