Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was the latest Republican candidate to join the Hot Topics table on this morning’s episode of The View — and like others who have decided to take on Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, he was grilled by the co-hosts about his views of the former president.

Things started smoothly as Suarez sat down with co-hosts Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin to talk about his campaign. The panel was impressed by his initiatives to give free savings accounts to kindergartners and financially assist both first generation college students and STEM students.

However, Hostin pointed out that Suarez, who opted not to vote for Trump in 2016 and 2020, said he would support Trump in this election, which she slammed as unreasonable.

When the Florida politician went on to discuss “inflation” and his concerns over China’s growing power, Hostin again inquired why he would vote for a man who has been “impeached twice” and has “two pending criminal indictments” — charges Suarez said he believes are “serious.”

“I’m running for president. I want people to vote for me,” he reminded the co-host. “I’m not running not to get the nod. I’m running to convince every single person in this audience to give me a chance, to give me an opportunity to serve them humbly and to make their life better.”

Behar then chimed in, asking whether he said he’d vote for Trump because he needs his base in order to succeed or if he thinks he would actually be a good president. While Suarez noted that it’s “true” he wouldn’t make it to the debate stage if he said he wasn’t supporting Trump, he reiterated that he’s running for the President of the United States so people vote for him, not his opponent.

“I understand that the conversation always gravitates toward the former president,” he added. “I don’t think that’s good for our country. I think that’s toxic. I think it promotes division.”

Hostin followed up by wondering why he would say anything at all about Trump in the first place if that’s the case, to which Suarez replied, “Because people are asking me a question about whether I’d vote for one person or the other and I want to be honest about my answer.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
