The View‘s normally subdued executive producer was heard loud and clear on this morning’s episode of the hit daytime talk show. While chatting about whether parents should raise their voices with their children, Brian Teta cheekily yelled at Whoopi Goldberg to end the segment.

According to the Journal of Child Abuse & Neglect, shouting at children can be just as damaging as physical and sexual abuse, as read by Goldberg during one of today’s Hot Topics segments. Despite the recent study, the longtime moderator believes it’s crucial to yell at kids once in a while.

“I’m sorry, you have to yell at your kids from time to time,” she said. “Sometimes they just don’t get it. So you have to get a little bit louder. That’s not to say you say, ‘You dumb ugly punk.’ That’s not what we’re doing. We’re saying, ‘If you take one more step in this house…'”

Joy Behar added that it’s a “horrible idea” to put yelling at your kids in the same category as sexual abuse. While she is strongly against getting physical with a child, she noted that what you say is more important than how loudly you say it.

“Don’t hit the kid. Don’t let them see you naked on the internet. Those are my rules,” she joked. “Also, you can say the nicest thing and yell and you can say the meanest thing and whisper. So it’s not the volume that counts, it’s what you’re saying.”

Sunny Hostin, on the other hand, did not believe in yelling at her children.

“We tend to model the behavior we experience as children,” she explained. “My parents never hit me and they never yelled at me. My husband’s mother was a yeller and he’s a yeller. I’ve had to teach him not to do that because I also think it’s very damaging.”

At the end of the conversation, Teta sharply demanded that Goldberg throw to commercial break from off-camera.

“Do it now! Go to commercial!” he yelled again, to which a flustered Goldberg looked around and replied, “I’m sorry, did you say something?”

The beloved EP then shook his head and kindly instructed, “Please go to commercial.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
