The Summer I Turned Pretty

Powered by Reelgood

The first three episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 saw Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) break up, get back together, get engaged, and break the news to their families at a tense dinner that ended in a blowout fight.

Season 3, Episode 4, “Last Stand,” picks up two weeks later on Belly’s 21st birthday. It’s a time for celebration, but Belly and Jere’s commitment to an August wedding hasn’t wavered. So have Laurel (Jackie Chung), Adam (Tom Everett Scott), John (Colin Ferguson), and Conrad (Christopher Briney) cooled off and accepted the news? Or does the summer get even messier?

Spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 4 ahead.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 4, kicked off with a birthday breakfast from mom and dad, which majorly lifted Belly’s spirits. When Laurel turned down an invite to go wedding dress shopping, however, an emotionally Belly took Taylor (Rain Spencer) and her mom (Kristen Connolly) on the special outing instead. To make extra money for the wedding and his dad, Jere started an internship alongside Steven (Sean Kaufman) at Breaker Capital. After his first day, he sped to Belly’s house to celebrate her big day and try to change Laurel’s mind about the wedding. Unfortunately, his efforts backfired, and during a fight with Belly, Laurel vowed not to attend the ceremony. So the fiancés retreated to Cousins, where Conrad was hiding out before his new gig at Garth started. After Conrad told Jere that getting married so young was “a little ridiculous,” the two grew even more discouraged. (Belly also decided not to go to Paris! UGH!) But before Conrad headed back to California, he sensed that Belly needed a win and selflessly gave his support by agreeing to be Jere’s best man.

Since The Summer I Turned Pretty is such a thoughtfully-crafted love letter to fans, each week until its September 17 finale, Decider will be taking a closer look at each episode and highlighting five moments that deserve to be put under the microscope. Whether they’re blink-and-miss-it details, brilliant Easter eggs, or major scenes that need to be talked through in greater depth, we’re here to obsess over, hypothesize, and dissect the series alongside you. We’re also shouting out a standout needle drop each episode, since the show’s soundtrack absolutely slaps.

From a photo in Belly’s room to a layered Laurel comment and more, here are five things you may have missed in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 4, “Last Stand.”

  1. Belly looking in the mirror with a photo of her and Conrad attached to it

In our Episode 3 Easter egg recap, we noted Belly swapped photos with Conrad to photos with Jere on the wall above her bed at home. But in Episode 4, eagle-eyed fans noticed she hasn’t fully erased her first love — in fact, she keeps a photo of the two of them in a prime location on her bedroom mirror! In other words, if you’re in line for Bonrad endgame, STAY IN LINE!

  2. Susannah writing letters for Belly, Jere, and Conrad on 'TSITP'

If you want to remain fully unspoiled about Jenny Han’s third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, skip this blurb and pick up with #3! But if you’re curious about the greater significance behind one specific line in Laurel’s chat with Belly and Jeremiah, we’re breaking it down.

As Jere tries to change Laurel’s mind about their engagement in Episode 4, he explains, “My mom always said that family is the most important thing. She would want this for us; for all of us…to be a family.” Laurel replies, “Jeremiah, I’m sorry. But we’ll never know what your mother would have wanted.” 1. Ouch. 2. Wait a second… While it’s true that we’ll never know how Susannah would have reacted to Belly and Jere’s engagement, we do have some idea of Susannah’s feelings. Final spoiler warning, people!

A Season 2 flashback showed Susannah writing letters to Conrad, Jere, and Belly before she passed, but before she put Conrad and Jeremiah’s in their envelopes, she dropped them. The scene may not have seemed that noteworthy, but in the third book, as the wedding approaches, Conrad gives Jeremiah his letter, he reads it, and he realizes Susannah accidentally mixed them up! Instead of reading the letter she wrote for him ahead of his wedding, Jere got the letter she wrote for Conrad, which talked about how Belly was the only person she’s ever seen Conrad love! *SCREAMS* If the show stays true to the book, Jere could eventually read the wrong letter and be reminded that his mother thought Conrad and Belly were meant to be. Stay tuned!

  3. Belly in a blue and red bikini, Conrad and Jeremiah on blue and red surfboards

All the Easter eggs in Season 3, Episode 1, Episode 2, and Episode 3 reminded us that Jenny Han, like Taylor Swift, is a detail-oriented girlie who loves callbacks, color symbolism, and small but mighty creative choices. So let’s look at some of the eye-catching inclusions in Episode 4, shall we?

First up? Nostalgic baked goods for Belly! Her mom made her Mikey Mouse pancakes for her birthday, which, in case you forgot, is tradition. And the episode ended with Conrad baking Belly birthday dirt bombs, her favorite muffins from the show and the books. Muffins also have some serious significance on the show. Allow Jenny and cast to remind you!

Next up? In our Season 3, Episode 2 Easter egg recap we dove deep into the red and gold color symbolism in the show — a nod to Taylor Swift’s songs “Daylight” and “Red.” But fans are also aware of red and blue symbolism as it relates to the “Red” lyrics, “Losing him was blue, like I’d never known…and loving him was red.” When Belly’s at the beach house with the boys in Episode 4, she wears a bikini with a blue and red plaid pattern. And though Conrad is frequently associated with red post-Season 3 trailer, when the brothers go surfing, Jere’s board is red and Conrad’s is blue. We see you, Jenny!

Last but not least, we’re just shouting out this painting of a man and two young children in the ocean. When Belly wakes up and sees Conrad in the beach house, he’s standing right in front of it. Is it just a painting? Or is it foreshadowing a future? Hmmm…

  4. Belly and Jeremiah watching 'Speed' on 'TSITP'
    Photo: Prime Video

During Episode 4, a scene that depicts a straight-up dream date shows Belly and Jeremiah outside at night, getting cozy on a pool float, and watching a movie. Members of Team Jellyfish may have been too busy swooning over the fiancés, and members of Team Bonrad may have been too furious that Belly and Jere were mocking Conrad loud enough for him to hear to notice what movie was playing. So if anyone was wondering, Belly and Jere were watching the 1994 action thriller Speed, starring Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Jeff Daniels, Alan Ruck, Glenn Plummer, and more. You can watch it, too!

    WHERE TO WATCH SPEED
  5. Conrad hugging Belly on 'TSITP' with the caption "Conrad: What have I done?"
    Photo: Prime Video

Believe me when I say that I full-on gasped when Episode 4 ended with an unexpected shift to Conrad’s point of view. As he and Belly hugged after a RIDICULOUSLY (IYKYK) sweet moment in the kitchen, a Chris Briney voiceover asked, “What have I done?” and the end credits rolled. Book three was partially told from Conrad’s point of view, and Briney confirmed that he’d be narrating a Season 3 episode, so buckle up and get ready to see the world through Conrad’s lens. Will the narration start with Chapter 20’s first sentence, “I saw her before she saw me,” and take us back to Episode 3’s ceremony for Susannah? One can only hope.

While Episode 4 wasn’t jam-packed with music, the selected songs packed a serious punch. I’ve gone long about how “Heartbeats” by José González is an iconic TV tearjerker used in shows like One Tree Hill, Scrubs, This is Us, and Superstore. And Billie Eilish’s “Halley’s Comet” (and it’s on-point lyrics) perfectly set the scene for Conrad and Belly’s touching end scene. But Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” won the coveted winning needle drop title in…a landslide! (The second Fleetwood Mac Season 3 song, BTW!) Show happenings aside, this song reduces me to tears whenever I hear it. So add an emotional Belly/Susannah/Laurel flashback and show Belly absolutely wrecked about her mother’s disapproval over her engagement and I’m a puddle.

In case I wasn’t crying enough, as “Landslide” plays and Belly sobs alone in her bed at the beach house, Conrad — suitcase in hand — walks down the hall ready to leave. He intends to say goodbye to Belly, but when he hears her crying, walks to her door, and longingly looks on as she breaks down, he knows he has to stay. He can’t go in and comfort her, so he leans his head and hand against the wall, and heads downstairs to show support in other ways. He give Jere his approval, agrees to be his best man, and bakes Belly birthday muffins. So, uh, sobbing? Again, props to Jenny Han. And again, HOW BIG IS THE MUSIC BUDGET?!
