The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3’s two-part premiere took characters and viewers on an emotional roller coaster of epic proportions.
Belly (Lola Tung) learned that Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) secretly hooked up with someone while they were “on a break.” Steven (Sean Kaufman) got into a car accident after a huge fight with Taylor (Rain Spencer). Conrad (Christopher Briney) landed a new job, then lost it on Day 1. And after learning that her brother would recover from his near-death experience, Belly not only reunited with, but got ENGAGED to Jere! (Naturally, Episode 1 and Episode 2 were also jam-packed with Easter eggs!)
Spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 3 ahead.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 3, “Last Supper,” picks up shortly after the engagement, with everyone leaving campus for summer and Susannah’s dedication ceremony right around the corner. While Taylor and Steven’s relationship was still on the rocks, since Jere bought an engagement ring and officially proposed to Belly, they were flying high and excited to tell their family (minus Conrad, who can’t make it) the good news. In a twist, Conrad caught a red-eye flight and surprised everyone at the ceremony. Anxious about what their parents would think, Belly and Jere initially decided to hold off on sharing their news. But during a tense meal, Belly shocked everyone with the big reveal. When the end credits rolled, Laurel (Jackie Chung), Adam (Tom Everett Scott), and crucially, Conrad, were left scrambling to process the news.
Since The Summer I Turned Pretty is such a thoughtfully-crafted love letter to fans, each week until its September 17 finale, Decider will be taking a closer look at each episode and highlighting five moments that deserve to be put under the microscope. Whether they’re blink-and-miss-it details, brilliant Easter eggs, or major scenes that need to be talked through in greater depth, we’re here to obsess over, hypothesize, and dissect the series alongside you. We’re also shouting out a standout needle drop each episode, since the show’s soundtrack absolutely slaps.
From set details and Belly’s Band-Aid to a layered carrot cake, noteworthy parallels, and more, here are five things you may have missed in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 3, “Last Supper.”

Photo: Prime Video I fought the urge to jokingly make Belly’s engagement ring the first thing you may have missed, because although it’s small and the memes are already flying, we know that our girl appreciates life’s simplicities, and I’m glad Jere didn’t run to Adam for money. So instead, let’s take a moment to appreciate the carefully curated set design, details, and props in The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s final season. As we learned from Belly’s photo wall, perfectly placed Sour Patch Kids and Cherry Coke, red and gold symbolism, the posters in Belly’s room, and more small but significant details in the first two episodes, Jenny Han is counting on Eagle-eyed viewers to step up their games.
In Episode 3, we saw photos of a young Rain Spencer all around Taylor’s house. We noticed Belly swapped photos with Conrad to photos with Jere on the wall above her bed at home. And a peek into Steven’s room revealed he’s a diehard video game lover, he’s a big Naruto fan, he’s currently reading Brandon Sanderson’s Tress of the Emerald Sea, and he adores 10 Things I Hate About You so much that he hung a poster of the rom-com on his wall. Iconic.

Photo: Prime Video As Belly and Laurel were sorting through photos ahead of Susannah’s ceremony in this episode, Laurel found one of young Conrad with baby carrots sticking out of his ears. “Remember when Conrad told you if you ate enough carrots you’d get x-ray vision and you believed him?” she asked. In the books, Belly hated carrots until Conrad convinced her they would give her superpowers. And that anecdote is meaningful because earlier in the episode, Taylor brought over a book with blueprints for Belly’s dream wedding, which included — wait for it — A CARROT CAKE. Sobbing. In the book, Jere notes that carrot cake is an unconventional flavor for a wedding cake, but not if Belly dreamed of marrying Conrad when she was young and thought carrots gave them special powers, right?!

Photo: Prime Video Endgame expectations aside, those who read The Summer I Turned Pretty books are having a completely different viewing experience than those who only watch the shows. When speaking with EW ahead of TSITP‘s Season 3 premiere, Han warned fans, “There are definitely changes… There are surprises. And there are things that aren’t exactly like the books.” From Taylor/Steven storylines to the way Belly and Jere’s proposal/announcement played out, there were several noticeable text-to-screen changes in Episode 3, but for those who haven’t read the books, we have to shout out Belly’s Band-Aid.
The scene where Belly cut herself shaving in the shower ahead of Susannah’s dedication ceremony may have seemed like a throwaway moment to show only fans. But those who read Book 3, We’ll Always Have Summer, know the Band-Aid was a nod to a sweet Conrad/Belly moment from the text. In Chapter 20, told from Conrad’s point of view, the eldest Fisher brother recalled seeing Belly at the ceremony before she spotted him. As he admired her dress and noted differences since the last time he’d seen her, he thought, “It occurred to me that she had grown up while. I wasn’t looking, that there was every likelihood she had changed and I didn’t know her anymore. But when she stood up to clap, I saw the Band-Aid on her ankle and I recognized her again. She was Belly.” *SQUEAL* While book fans weren’t thrilled with the lack of Belly voiceover in this episode, at least we got the Band-Aid.

Photo: Prime Video In Season 3’s first two episodes, fans clocked several parallels to TSITP scenes past AND Han’s other projects, To All The Boys and XO, Kitty. Wouldn’t you know it? Episode 3 includes several more callbacks! There’s an argument to be made that Belly’s hand up/ring scene mirrors The Notebook, but three of the biggest Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the screen moments come when Conrad gets a slow motion entrance and meets Belly’s eyes at his mom’s ceremony. Fans couldn’t help but flash back to TSITP‘s premiere, when Belly and Conrad met eyes outside the beach house, Taylor Swift played, and it felt like time stopped. A few minutes later, Jeremiah, Belly, Conrad, and Steven put their arms around each other and posed for group photo, as is their summer tradition. While they waited for the camera, Belly instinctively looked at Conrad first, then smiled up at Jeremiah, clearly torn. Déjà vu! And finally, when the episode ended, Conrad was left standing alone, processing his emotions as we’ve seen several times before. Alexa: Play “right where you left me” by Taylor Swift. Stop leaving this man behind challenge!

Photo: Prime Video In the TSITP books, Belly was actively aware of menu prices whenever her parents were paying, and Season 3, Episode 3 honors that financial anxiety. After Laurel told Adam that the lunch for six people was on her, Belly got visibly stressed as Adam and Jeremiah both ordered $75 surf and turf entrees. In an effort to make the bill lower, Belly said she wasn’t very hungry and ordered tomato bisque for her meal. And Conrad followed, ordering the cheapest entree on the menu, a $40 seared salmon fillet. When Belly reached for some bread to fill herself up ahead of her soup, Adam went a step further and ordered an expensive seafood tower so Belly wouldn’t “starve.” It was a subtle but brilliant scene that highlighted not only the differences in Fisher and Conklin families finances and lifestyles, but a key difference between Conrad and Jere.

From hits by Billie Eilish to Sabrina Carpenter, Season 3, Episode 3 featured another memorable soundtrack. But the winning needle drop is, without a doubt, Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” which perfectly set the mood as Conrad was left alone to process Belly and Jeremiah’s engagement news. On top of the song’s general vibe and the fact that we know Connie is a Radiohead fan because of a poster in his apartment, the song’s lyrics held extra significance, particularly the line: “This is my final fit, my final bellyache with no alarms and no surprises…” BELLYACHE?! You’ve got to be kidding me, Jenny Han. Help, we’re still at the restaurant!
