“I’m seated! The theater employees are scared and asking me to leave because it’s “only on Prime Video,” but I’m simply too seated!”
That will be the thought running through heads of The Summer I Turned Pretty fans for a full week after TSITP Season 3, Episode 10, “Last Year” teed up an epic finale for the books.
Spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 10 ahead.
“Last Year” showed Belly (Lola Tung) building her new life in Paris, while Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (Christopher Briney) sorted themselves and their relationship out back home. In a little over an hour, TSITP sped through changing seasons, showing holidays, long-awaited conversations, new friendships develop, major moments of healing, and more.
While Season 3, Episode 9 was poorly received by fans, Episode 10 gave refreshing closure on several storylines, showed the character growth we’ve been yearning for, and set the stage for one hell of a finale. Curious what went down during TSITP Season 3, Episode 10? And what fans had to say about standout moments? We’ve got you covered!
The episode picks up three months into Belly’s Parisian adventure. She’s navigating life with annoying roommates, feeling homesick as hell, and low-key wishing she was spending Thanksgiving with her family. Back home, Jeremiah is still recovering from the breakup. After Steven (Sean Kaufman) lovingly kicks him off his couch, Jere starts crashing with Denise (Isabella Briggs). And when Adam (Tom Everett Scott) cuts him off after learning he dropped out of school, he gets a job at a restaurant and really starts piecing his life back together.
After Conrad touches base with Laurel and learns that Belly is staying in Paris for Christmas as well, he stares at the Polaroid photo the two took during Season 2’s beach house party and decides to write her a letter, just like he does after she travels abroad in the third book.
Dear Belly,
Firstly, I don’t even know if I should be writing you. If this is allowed. If it’s not, just say so. I’ll understand. I should be memorizing the cardiovascular system, but I’d rather be writing you. Sometimes I try to picture what your life is like over there. I imagine you sitting in a little café, drinking. What does Belly in Paris drink? Café au lait with lots of sugar? Along with some disgustingly sweet pastry? Or maybe Sour Patch Kids. Do they have those in Paris? I bet if they do you’ve found them. Or maybe French Belly doesn’t eat junk food. You’re probably different over there. I bet Paris is beautiful during the holidays. I hear you’re staying there for Christmas. I guess that means you’re happy. I like picturing that. Well, Merry Christmas, Belly. I hope Paris is everything you dreamed it would be.
Conrad
While life in Paris isn’t perfect, Belly’s found some good friends, including Benito, who spends a snowy Christmas eve with her. The two drink wine, talk, and explore the city. But they’re still just friends, something Taylor (Rain Spencer) — and likely viewers, even if they’re Team Conrad! — can’t understand. Cut to Christmas in Cousins, which grows bluer when Jeremiah realizes he’s not ready to face the beach house, his dad, and his brother. After a loving heart-to-heart with Laurel in the driveway (yes, he apologizes for being a dick after the wedding!), he heads back to Denise’s house, where the two have a deep chat before she invites him to spend the holidays with her family. (HOLD UP, Jenny. Are we getting Jere/Denise endgame after all?!)
When Taylor visits Belly in Paris for a New Year’s Eve party, both Fisher brothers reach out. Jeremiah finally calls Belly and the two make amends, while Conrad sends Sour Patch Kids, Junior Mint (with infinity necklace), and another letter. In the spirit of starting new, Belly declares the “end of an era,” faces her fears of hurting someone again, and kisses Benito (aka “Sexy Latino Chalamet”) at midnight. The two start dating, Belly finds a perfect solo apartment, and she decides to stay in Paris for another year.
In one of the episode’s most satisfying scenes, Conrad and Jeremiah run into each other at Susannah’s gravesite on the anniversary of her death. They get real, address the Bellyphant in the room, Conrad swears he wasn’t trying to swoop in, and Jere admits that once he found out about Belly and Conrad’s Christmas in Cousins he knew it was all over. (Much to fans’ delights, Conrad also tells Jere, “You can’t take someone, Jere. She’s not a fucking object!”) The brothers admit they broke the promises they made to their moms, and after Conrad apologizes for everything, he reveals he’s been writing Belly letters but she hasn’t replied. “I never could compete with what you two had. That connection was like a force field,” Jeremiah tells him. “Do what you have to do. Don’t expect me to be okay with it. But don’t fucking waste it, either.” The scene is raw, refreshing, and heartwarming, and it crucially leaves both brothers walking away with their heads held high for the first time in a long time.
With Jere’s blessing, Conrad puts pen to paper once more:
Dear Belly,
I saw Jeremiah yesterday. We both went to visit Mom’s grave. Things went better than the last time we were together. No punches were thrown. He told me you’d been in touch. I might as well be completely honest here, because who even knows if you’re reading my letters. You might have thrown them all out without opening them, which is your right. But I’ll go ahead and say it, even though I have no right. It killed me a little that Jere’s talked to you. Still, I don’t think he hates me anymore, which is a good thing. () Also, in case I have’t made it clear, I think about you a lot. You’re pretty much all I think about. Just so we’re clear.
Love, Conrad
Though Belly agrees to go to Mexico to meet Benito’s family, she finally writes Conrad back, saying, “I never thanked you for sending me Junior Mint. So, thank you! And thank you for all your letters. It’s sweet of you to think of me. I finally found a permanent apartment. This is my new address. Hope you’re well.”
While it might not sound like much, after Conrad gets invited to a medical conference in Brussels, Agnes convinces him to visit his old flame in Paris. Before the episode ends, he hops a plane ahead of Belly’s birthday, while she heads to get her hair cut short and declares, “I’m ready for something new this summer.” In other words, TSITP Season 3, Episode 11 can’t come soon enough.
With Jeremiah officially stepping back, and Conrad making a grand, romantic, Sabrina-esque gesture, fans are hoping that TSITP‘s final episode is a dreamy, romantic Parisian reunion for Belly and Conrad, and that the series finds a way to honor the book’s endgame. Mark you calendars for TSITP finale, folks. Summer is almost over! But TSITP‘s legacy (and hopefully Belly and Conrad’s endgame) will live on in our hearts!
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 finale premieres Wednesday, Sept. 17 on Prime Video.
