Prime Video‘s The Summer I Turned Pretty may be adapted from Jenny Han‘s YA trilogy of novels, but those who have devoured the books still may not be completely prepared for what’s coming in the third and final season of the TV series.

Han teased to Entertainment Weekly that “there are definitely changes” in the upcoming installment of the series from We’ll Always Have Summer, the last book in her trilogy that was released in 2011.

“There are surprises,” she revealed. “And there are things that aren’t exactly like the books.”

Series stars Lola Tung, Gavin Casalegno, and Christopher Briney echoed this sentiment to EW; Casalegno claimed that fans who anticipate knowing what happens “don’t really know,” Tung teased that they “have no clue,” and Briney added that they “have not read the scripts.”

Per EW, like Han’s 2011 novel, Season 3 — which debuts on Prime Video on July 16 — follows suit in that involves a time jump. The outlet writes that the series picks up two years after Season 2 ended, with “Belly” (Tung) and Jeremiah (Casalegno) still together — though Belly’s former flame and Jeremiah’s brother, Conrad (Briney) still seemingly remains in the rearview mirror.

Fans have long been awaiting Season 3, which was greenlit in the midst of Season 2’s release in the summer of 2023. Nonetheless, Han told EW that she intends for a “satisfying” ending for both Team Jeremiah and Team Conrad fans, alike, noting that “a successful love triangle is one where, no matter what happens, people are going to be devastated and heartbroken.”

“Because if the answer feels really clear and easy, then there’s no real conflict,” she continued. “No matter what you do, someone’s going to be hurt by it.”
