So many highly picked quarterbacks are set up to fail.
With Brian Callahan being fired by the Titans on Monday, Cam Ward became the fourth straight quarterback to be drafted first overall to see his head coach fired before his rookie season was even over. The same happened with Caleb Williams when the Bears fired Matt Eberflus midseason, with Bryce Young when the Panthers fired Frank Reich midseason and with Trevor Lawrence when the Jaguars fired Urban Meyer midseason.
Of the 39 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2015, Ward became the 17th to have his head coach fired during or after his rookie season, a whopping 43.6 percent.
That’s a recipe for failure, not success. More and more, coaching has been revealed as perhaps the biggest determinant of quarterback development.
