NextImg:'The Shards': Ryan Murphy's series adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel set to star Richard Gere's son opposite Cindy Crawford's daughter

More On:

Ryan Murphy‘s upcoming adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis‘ novel The Shards is set to star the children of two Hollywood legends and former lovers: Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project has finally escaped development hell. Crawford’s budding starlet daughter Kaia Gerber was originally attached to star. Now the outlet reports Midnight Club actor Igby Rigney will be joining her as the series lead and he will be starring opposite newcomer Homer Gere. Graham Campbell is also attached to star.

But things on set may get a little awkward considering Gerber and Homer’s parents were once married to each other from 1991 to 1995. According to People, Crawford and Richard met in 1988 at a barbecue and spontaneously eloped in Las Vegas with aluminum foil rings in 1991, per InStyle.

The couple’s 17-year age gap may have played a role in their subsequent divorce. Crawford said in 2016 that “part of the problem” was “I was young, and he was Richard Gere.”

Now, their kids will get the chance to show off their acting chops in the new drama.

Gerber has been making a name for herself in Hollywood with roles in Bottoms, Palm Royale, and Saturday Night. She even played herself in the recent season of Hacks.

But The Shards will be Gere’s debut role. The young actor’s only credited role according to his IMDb is in a 2022 short film titled August.

The Shards is based on the semi-autobiographical novel that is loosely based on Ellis’ time attending The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks in the 1980s. Rigney will star as Bret, a student at a prep school whose life begins to change when he crosses paths with newcomer Robert Mallory (Gere). Campbell will star as Bret’s best friend, Thom Wright.

The Shards is Murphy’s latest drama since completing Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The television auteur took over the project after it got stuck in development at HBO Max since January 2024, per THR.

The series does not have a writer attached. However, Ellis and Murphy will executive produce the series.
