Finally, The Rock seems to be getting serious about facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
“The Pat McAfee Show” was onsite in Boulder on Friday, building to Deion Sanders’ undefeated Colorado team hosting in-state rival Colorado State on Saturday, and Dwayne Johnson stopped by with a purpose.
Johnson’s “cousin” Roman Reigns (they are scripted in WWE as being related but aren’t technically related by blood, though, they belong to the same Anoa’i wrestling family) has been the promotion’s heavyweight champion for over 1,100 days.
The story with Reigns anointing himself the “head of the table” has been building for a clash with The Rock for years.
The build has been happening for so long that, frankly, some of the WWE faithful have lost their faith that it’s ever going to actually happen.
So it was revealed to McAfee — who has also been a color commentator and occasional wrestler for WWE — that they actually had a plan penciled in place for The Rock to wrestle Reigns at WrestleMania 39 at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles earlier this year.
Johnson explained that at the beginning of last year he had a meeting with WWE boss Vince McMahon and President Nick Khan, where they embraced at the end with an unofficial agreement the match would happen.
“We had a year to really think about this,” he said.
He said that the “North Star” thought was to do something “unprecedented” for WWE fans, and to make it where “WrestleMania isn’t the end of something, it’s actually the beginning of something bigger.”
McAfee asked: So what happened?
“We got really, really close, but we couldn’t actually nail what that thing was, so we decided to put our pencils down.”
Then, The Rock teased that the merger with Endeavor — which has long represented him as a talent agency — is now closed and that WrestleMania 40 is in Philadelphia, pausing to get a raucous reaction from the live audience, before citing the extravaganza as a “potential” destination.
The two even have history in Philadelphia.
One of the key moments in Reigns’ arc was when he won the 2015 Royal Rumble at the Wells Fargo Center.
Fans, who wanted Daniel Bryan to win, and were irate that Bryan was not even in the battle royal, booed Reigns even when the crowd-favorite Rock came out to celebrate with him.
Of course, that was prior to Reigns’ eventual heel turn in 2020, which led to him becoming the WWE’s biggest current star.
