NextImg:The ‘Red, White, and Royal Blue’ Trailer Will Make You Fangirl Scream Over That Kiss

Pride month may be over, but here’s at least one more treat for the gays: The Red, White, and Royal Blue trailer is finally here!

Based on the popular 2019 romance novel by Casey McQuiston, Red, White, and Royal Blue movie is bringing to life the epic romance between the fictional son of the American president, Alex Claremont-Diaz (played by Taylor Zakhar Perez), and the fictional Prince of England, Henry (played by Nicholas Galzitine). It’s pretty much your classic enemies-to-friends-to-lovers tale, with a little bit of fake friendship thrown in. Fan-fiction lovers definitely know where this one is headed. (And, no, contrary to what the rumor mill might have you believe, Red, White, and Royal Blue was not originally fan-fiction for The Social Network. Don’t believe everything you see online!)

In the trailer, which you can watch in the player above, fans get to see some of the most beloved moments from the book, including the cake-tastrophe, the late-night Cornettos, the sexually-charged polo match, and, of course, that passionate first kiss in the snow, all to the sounds of Lil Nas X’s “That’s What I Want.” While you don’t see any nudity, we do get a glimpse of Alex and Henry getting hot and heavy in their hotel room. Smut lovers needn’t worry: This movie is rated R. While we don’t get a glimpse of the infamous turkey incident, the trailer does include a clip from that heart-wrenching pseudo-break-up scene. Please don’t cry, sweet baby boys.

The Red, White, and Royal Blue movie is directed by Matthew Lopez, who took home 2020 Tony Award for Best Play for The Inheritance, a very different sort of gay romance. In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, Lopez said he knew he wanted to direct the Red, White, and Royal Blue after reading the first 100 pages of the book, saying, “[I found] in the book something I had rarely seen on screen: a love story between two young men that is hopeful, funny, and deeply romantic.”

The Red, White, and Royal Blue cast also stars Uma Thurman as President Ellen Claremont, Stephen Fry as the King of England, Sarah Shahi as Chief of Staff Zahra Bankston, Ellie Bamber as Princess Bea, and Rachel Hilson as Alex’s BFF Nora Holleran. (But where is June?!)

Red, White, and Royal Blue will begin streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video on August 11, 2023.
