The Issue: Top government officials including a journalist in a group chat discussion about war plans.

President Trump has consistently chosen the least qualified candidates for the most critical roles in government, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth a prime example.

(“Trumpies Own This Snafu,” Editorial, March 26).

So it’s no surprise that a major security breach occurred — where sensitive war plans about military strikes in Yemen were shared in a group chat, and no one even realized the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic was included.

We need a defense secretary with the skills and knowledge to manage the largest workforce on the planet and ensure the safety of all Americans.

Instead, we have someone learning on the job. If he doesn’t get up to speed quickly, lives will be at risk.

Bob Bascelli

Seaford

You can’t just gloss over a serious security error by saying, “I take responsibility,” like National Security Adviser Mike Waltz did.

He should be fired to show that such breaches have consequences and that President Trump has no patience for this kind of incompetence.

One would think that war plans should be classified, yet this discussion was not.

Who is responsible for that?

Rob Feuerstein

The Trump administration should acknowledge the mistake and focus on moving forward.

This incident shouldn’t be a long-term issue — except for Democrats, who have nothing better to do than burn Teslas.

Do you really think people will have trouble trusting Trump on national security because of this?

Compared to former President Joe Biden, it’s not even close.

I don’t want to hear anything from Democrats about national security when they essentially lied to the American people for years about the president’s mental acuity.

If that’s not the biggest national security issue of our lifetime, I don’t know what is.

The unmistakable conclusion from the Signal-chat scandal is that Trump’s security advisers are indifferent and careless when it comes to the safety of American pilots flying combat missions over Yemen.

This alone would keep me up at night wondering how protected my family really is.

Even worse, Trump claims he knew nothing about this colossal security failure.

That only adds to my anxiety.

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping must be popping the champagne right now.

In response to anti-DEI orders from Donald Trump, the Defense Department at least briefly erased thousands of web pages dedicated to historical events such as the Holocaust and the “Never Forget” terrorist attacks of 9/11.

In light of the recent Signal scandal, which potentially compromised national security, perhaps this administration should focus on a different kind of DEI: Dangerous, Erroneous Incompetence.

Trump officials exemplified this during the recent Signal leak.

The Signal app mishap was embarrassing, but it was nothing more than that.

Signal is a secure communication tool government officials have used in the past.

The inclusion of a reporter in the chat was an accident, likely a slip of the finger, and an unfortunate but unintentional mistake by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.

Thankfully, none of the content compromised national security.

Everyone has sent an email or message to the wrong person at some point.

I once mistakenly sent a personal message to my dentist — an embarrassing moment, but ultimately harmless.

When a colossal security failure occurs — like including a journalist in what should have been a classified discussion of military plans — Trump’s response is to attack.

Yet his animus toward left-leaning media has nothing to do with the fact that high-ranking officials failed to recognize they were engaging in a security breach.
